Dierckxsens and Steels give Landbouwkrediet 1-2
Evans wins Tour of Austria for the second time

The final stage of the Wiesbauer Tour in Vienna ended in a bunch sprint with Landbouwkrediet's veteran Ludo Dierckxsens taking the win in front of his more fancied teammate Tom Steels and third placed Jochen Summer (Elk Haus). Steels, who had already won two stages, made a "present" of the final stage to his hard working teammate. "I thank the team and above all Tom Steels, who gave me the victory here in Vienna," said Dierckxsens. "We have worked hard for him twice and he wanted to give us something back."
Australian Cadel Evans (T-Mobile) finished 34th in the stage and claimed the overall victory in the tour for the second time in his career. Evans first won in 2001 with Saeco, and now seems to be back on the right track after a crash-ridden 2003 season. I've fulfilled a dream with the second victory in this beautiful country," said Evans. "I love Austria and its mountains. My team did a perfect job. The success was a real bonus to recommend me for the Tour."
How it unfolded

The final stage in Vienna was expected to suit Tom Steels and his team down to a T, as it consisted of 20 laps of a flat, fast 6.2 km circuit. The pace was very high from the start but the field remained together for the first five laps, allowing David Kopp (Lamonta) to win the first intermediate sprint and further strengthen his lead in that competition.
Shortly afterwards, a trio with Patrick Riedesser (Hervis), Wolfgang Murer (Elk house) and Jukka Vastaranta (Rabobank) escaped, and was able to build a 1'30 lead on the peloton. A solo chase by Jean Nuttli (Volksbank) was unsuccessful, and the three leaders stayed away until the second sprint at halfway, won by Riedesser from Murer and Vastaranta.

The situation was the same at the third sprint with five laps to go, with Riedesser, Murer and Vastaranta crossing in that order, with the field just over 30 seconds behind. Finally with three laps to go, the trio was caught and the Landbouwkrediet riders wound things up for an expected Tom Steels win. A crash in the last corner didn't disrupt things in front, but instead of Steels crossing the line, arms raised, it was his teammate Ludo Dierckxsens who took the victory with a delighted Steels in second place.
Evans finished safely in the field, as did all the other GC riders and the overall classification saw Evans win with a 19 second advantage over Michele Scarponi (Domina Vacanze) and Maurizio Vandelli (Radclub-Resch). Evans' teammate Tomas Konecny took the mountains jersey, while Steels claimed the points and Kopp the sprints classifications. The best team was T-Mobile, with nearly 6 minutes advantage over Domina Vacanze.
