Michael Creed (US Postal Service p/b Berry Floor) and took out today's stage of the Cascade Classic. For the men it was the second stage, following the Pacific Power Road Race yesterday. For the women today's stage kicked off their tour. Creed's win on the challenging course earned him the leaders jersey, which was donned during the stage by local rider Evan Elkan (Broadmark Capital Cycling).

Despite only being 70 miles in length, today's stage is a very challenging course that travels through the west side of the Pacific Crest and up the famous McKenzie Pass. This pass is so well known that local bike manufacturer, Burley, even name one of their frames after it. The course travels through lava fields, over the mountain and into the town of Sisters, finally finishing up a steep climb at the base of the middle sister. In total the course climbs 6000 feet throughout the stage.

In the men's race an early break of 16 riders went up the road and were allowed to gain significant time of the peloton. In this group was the yellow jersey holder Evan Elkan (Broadmark) as well as Mike Creed (USPS), Henk Vogels and Jeff Louder (Navigators), David Washburn and Russell Hamby (Sierra Nevada), Tyler Farrar, Gord Fraser and Mike Sayers (Health Net), Colby Pearce and Dan Bowman (TIAA Cref/5280), Bernard Van Ulden and John Kelly (Webcor), Dylan Sebel, Andrew Pinfold and Cam Evans (Symetrix), Robbie Yost (Subway Express).

Sebel tried his hand at going alone but was reeled in by the break and eventually when the race hit the climbs Hamby, Yost, Van Ulden, Washburn and Vogels were dropped, leaving 11 in the break. Out of the break Creed, Louder and Sayers rode away near the top of McKenzie but were caught after the descent by the rest of the riders in the break. However, it wasn't long until the final climb came and split them up again with the same trio taking off.

As the final climb continued Creed proved too strong for his companions up the climb and soloed to the finish to take the win stage two and take over control of the yellow jersey. Sayers came in to take second place and Louder third.

Creed was smiling from ear to ear with his ride today as he explained what was going through his head during the race. "As soon as we hit Sisters, we had 8 minutes. Since no one really wanted to work in the group, I thought, 'relax, relax.' Then, by the time we hit that first steep pitch, I was thinking 'Alright, I'm just going to go in my big ring and if you can come with me, great. If not, I'll go on.'"

Creed admitted that he was worried about being in the break with Louder. "I thought Louder was playing coy with me because he was killing me on the first climb," he said. "I started giving it a little bit of gas and put the pressure down and got rid of him. I wouldn't mind Sayers being on my wheel so I was willing to give him the stage if he could have hung, but I had to put as much time as possible into Louder before the time trial. God only knows how fast [Scott] Moninger and [Chris] Horner are.

"Even in the last km I was expecting Moninger and Horner to come flying past me."

Yesterday's race winner had another good day to make the break and was "thrilled" with his day. He lost the yellow jersey, but was pleased to wear the 'Best Oregon rider jersey' as consolation.

"There's nothing like riding off the front," he said. "That is my favourite thing to do"

In the women's race the T-Mobile team used their numbers and strength in the climbs when the mountains came along. Kimberly Bruckner attacked and was immediately chased by Lyne Bessette (Quark). The T-Mobile team persistently countered until finally Lynn Gaggioli got away solo. Just after the feed zone at the 56-mile mark.

Gaggioli's lead got up to 1'45" by the base of the last climb, which was a 10-kilometer gradual climb to the finish. Thorburn attacked the remaining riders in the bunch, which was down to 13 riders and was able to bridge the gap to Gaggioli with no one able to follow her.

Catching Gaggioli on the line, Thorburn took the win, accentuating a great season to date and displaying the form that will carry her through to the Olympic Games next month.

Behind, the chase group had dwindled to four riders and Bessette was able to outsprint Bruckner, Erin Mirabella and Kim Anderson to take third place.
