Cipollini's revenge

After being convincingly beaten by Baden Cooke in yesterday's third stage of the Tour of Med, Mario Cipollini (Domina Vacanze) took his revenge today by winning stage 4 between Greasque and Marignane. The Lion King got his train in order and crossed the line well clear of teammate Andrus Aug and Marco Zanotti (Vini Caldirola). It was his first victory of the season and came nine months after his last triumph in the Giro d'Italia 2003.
"I was very disappointed not to win [yesterday]," said Cipollini afterwards. "I spoke about it a lot with my teammates. We decided to change the manner in which we launched the sprint. I asked Gian Matteo Fagnini, who is without doubt the most skilled and acrobatic rider, to pilot me through the last corners where the parcours was dangerous. We had studied it and did not want to be surprised. I then charged Andrus Aug, who is faster, to lead out the sprint in the last 300 metres. Our plan worked well and this victory has liberated me. I have not won since the Giro and I was starting to find it a very long time."
Cipollini also spoke about the Tour de France, where he hopes that his team will gain an unlikely wild card. "I like France, this is where I've won my most beautiful sprints. I love the Tour de France and since I've been reproached a lot for never finishing it, I am determined to do so if Jean-Marie Leblanc invites my team."
The race lead stayed with Igor Astarloa (Cofidis), who has just two seconds to spare over Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step) and Sylvain Chavanel (La Boulangère) going into tomorrow's all important 28 km team time trial between La Garde and Toulon (Mt. Faron).

The fourth and longest stage always promised to be one for the sprinters, but after 27 km five riders went on the attack: Chris Peers (Chocolade Jacques), Matej Jurco (De Nardi), Thorwald Veneberg (Rabobank), Nicolas Jalabert (Phonak) and Sandy Casar (FDJeux.com). Behind them another three riders: Nicolas Portal (AG2R), Eddy Seigneur (RAGT Semences) and Patrice Halgand (Crédit Agricole) set off in pursuit, managing to catch the leaders at St Maximin.
The peloton wasn't letting them get too far ahead though, and limited the gap to 1'30 after 46 kilometres. The bunch got as close as 10 seconds at one stage, before letting the leaders have some more rope, however after 90 kilometres it was all back together again. Almost immediately, Nicolas Reynaud (RAGT) counter-attacked and managed to build a lead of nearly four minutes before he was absorbed with 7 km to go.
Baden Cooke's chances in the sprint were reduced after he lost leadout man Brad McGee, who had abandoned with knee pain. Mario Cipollini and his Domina Vacanze train made the most of it and Cipo was piloted to perfection to the stage win.
