Wegmann at home in Italy

A winning move made in the final kilometre of this year's Tre Valli Varesine, the first of three races in the Trittico Lombardo series, gave German Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner) the victory ahead of defending champion Danilo Di Luca (Saeco). Wegmann, a surprise winner with teammate and classics specialist Davide Rebellin in the field, showed he could power clear on the flats as well as on the climbs. Wegmann once again found success on Italian soil after taking home the green jersey of best climber in this year's Giro d'Italia.

Over nearly 200km of racing, the victory came down to a group of four including Wegmann, Di Luca, Filippo Simeoni, and Vladimir Duma. As Wegmann opened a gap under the red kite, Di Luca looked to Simeoni to close it, but the Domina Vacanze rider had no answer and Di Luca could only watch as victory slipped from his grasp. The Saeco leader salvaged second place with his own acceleration to drop his companions, but the damage was done. Duma, meanwhile, put in a stronger sprint to take the final step of the podium from Simeoni.
