41st GP Kanton Aargau/Gippingen - 1.1Switzerland, August 29, 20042003 Results Results Past winners Tosatto denies locals a home winBy Anthony Tan Matteo Tosatto (Fassa Bortolo) won a foul-weathered edition of the GP Kanton Aargau/Gippingen in Switzerland on Sunday, beating a quality field of riders that included World Cup leader Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner), Dario Frigo (Fassa Bortolo), Stefen Wesemann (T-Mobile Team) and Alex Zülle (Phonak), Zülle riding his last race as a professional.
Riders took to the start at 11am in pouring rain to complete 10 laps of a 19 kilometre-long parcours. Not surprisingly, the peloton was slow to get going with the first two loops completed at a moderate pace, but soon after, Saeco's Giosué Bonomi and Domina Vacanze's Andris Nauduzs took flight. The pair stayed away for the next five laps, but a combination of an upping of the pace back in peloton, a mid-race thunderstorm and tired legs eventually saw Bonomi and Nauduzs back in the fold with just under three laps remaining. With the scene set for a bunch gallop, it was Italian Matteo Tosatto launching himself off Markus Zberg's wheel with 350 metres to go to take line honours, denying the Swiss pair of Zberg (Gerolsteiner) and Martin Elmiger (Phonak Hearing Systems) a local win. Afterwards, winner Tosatto publicly thanked his team-mate Tom Danielson in helping close down the break and again in setting him up for the sprint, and intends to take his good form all the way to the World's in Verona, Italy early October. The 196 kilometre race was run at an average speed of 39.513 km/h. The sad news of the day was a crash in the final two kilometres, which saw Gerolsteiner rider Georg Totschnig fall heavily and break his collarbone. It's now likely the Austrian, who finished seventh overall in the Tour de France, will unfortunately miss this year's world road championships. PhotographyImages by Christine Schramm/www.tourfoto.de
