Juniors battle it out in the rain and hail

Four new criterium champions win the prized stars and stripes jerseys

By Keri Fagan, USA Cycling

Racing continued for the juniors Saturday as the younger categories lined up for the criterium, their final race of the week. Although the morning was sunny and dry, the middle of the day saw rain and hail come down making the rest of the afternoon cold and very wet.

This didn't stop the juniors racing hard however, as attack after attack made way for some very exciting racing. On the course first was the men's 13-14 category, which saw Alex Garcia (Whittier, Calif.) and Alex Coelho (Loveland, Colo.) break away, leaving yesterday's road race winner Nick Bax (Bethesda, Md.) back in the bunch.

Bax patiently waited in the bunch and made his move with a lap remaining, bridging to the lead pair, and the three stayed away until the finish. Garcia's sprint however, was too good and he convincingly took the win from Coelho and Bax, with Alfredo Cruz (San Ysidro, Calif.) winning the bunch sprint for fourth place in front of Bryan Larsen (Placerville).

In the women's 13-14 Danielle Haulman (Denver, Colo.), who won both the time trial and the road race, dragged the bunch around for 10 laps and was out-sprinted on the line by Sinead Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Taking second place was Jacqueline Kurth (Palm City, Fla.), with Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, Pa.) taking the bronze and Samantha Schneider (West Allis, Wis.) and Danielle Haulman (Denver, Colo.) rounding off the podium positions.

Just as the rain started coming down, the Junior Men's 10-12 criterium began. The wet roads caused a couple of crashes with yesterday's road race winner, Lawson Craddock taking a fall on the back straight. After a lap out he managed to get back into the bunch and eventually took out the sprint to win his second gold medal of the week. He was very modest about his win, telling USA Cycling "I just came in as hard as I could."

Taking second today, was the winner of the time trial, Daniel Tisdell (San Jose, Calif.), with Oscar Chavez (El Paso, Texas) taking third. Gabriel Alva (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Brandon Feehery (Homewood, Ill.) took fourth and fifth respectively.

In the women's 10-12 crit, Lillian Gordis (Berkley, Calif.) was aggressive throughout the race but couldn't get away from yesterdays road race winner Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif.) and at the finish, a small group came to the line for a bunch sprint. Gordis just beat out Rivera with Paulina Lopez (El Paso, Texas) taking third place and Hollis Owens (Lynchburg, Va.) and Ashlyn Gerber (Clermont, Fla.) rounding off the podium positions.

The final four criteriums will take place tomorrow to round off the ten days of racing that made up the Park City Cycling Festival.
