Bronzini takes first stage at Drenthe

Georgia Bronzini (Mix Safi Pasta Zara Man) took the sprint in today's first stage of Novilon Internationale Damesronde van Drenthe in Holland. After a long day that included pave, narrow roads and a couple of short climbs on a hill made from garbage Bronzini was victorious amongst the Dutch and Belgian riders who are seasoned at this type of racing.
One hundred and fifty four women lined up for what was to be a day of crashes and chasing back on for many. At 39km to race hit pave, which successfully split the peloton into five or six groups with about of a third of the field never getting back on. After the pave, 100 girls regrouped and remained in tact until a crash at the 64km mark where the road narrows just before the short steep climb. About 30 girls went down in the crash and once again the bunch was split into pieces.

Fifteen kilometers later just prior to the second climb a group got away. The group included Miriam Melchers and Mio Oki (Farm Frites-Hartol), Amber Neben (T-Mobile), Marion Clignet (Team Basis) and a Swiss rider from the Lietzsport Cycling Team. Between SC Nobili Rubinetterie and Nurnberg Versicherung the break was reeled in but it wasn't long before another crash eventuated on the second climb and if you weren't in front of it you were out of the race.
A group of 35 now led the race with a small group of 15 chasing and eventually getting back on with 8km remaining in the race. At this point, Angela Brodka (Mix Team Farm Frites) attacked and got a convincing gap. Nobili chased again until four kilometres to go when the Dutchies took over. With 700m to go Brodka was caught and the sprint lead out began. Bronzini took the win followed by Debby Mansveld and Veronique Belleter (Vlaanderen T Interim).

- Mirjam Melchers (Mix Team Farm Frites) got herself in a break with team-mate Mio Oki in the latter stages of the race, but her group was caught soon afterwards.
- Team Nurnberg Versicherung takes control at the 39 kilometre mark as the race hits the pavè.
- Debby Mansveld (Vlaanderen T Interim) shows plenty of focus in the peloton. Mansveld placed second on today's stage behind Giorgia Bronzini.
