Race 2 - April 29: Greenwood criterium, 50 miles

Abraham number one this time

By Kristy Scrymgeour

After lapping the field together on Saturday at the Athens Twilight Criterium, Emile Abraham (Aerospace Engineering) and Brice Jones (Health Net) came one-two again in today's Greenwood Criterium in South Carolina. This time however, the order was reversed, with Abraham taking the sprint out of a break of six to win the race in front of Jones.

Today's race was another fast, aggressive effort on a four-corner criterium circuit in downtown Greenwood. Attacks were frequent and strong, but it was mid way through the race when the decisive break occurred. In the break were Abraham, Jones, Roberto Gaggioli (Team Monex), John Lieswyn (Health Net), Thad Dulin (Colavita Olive Oil) and David Fuentes (McGuire Cycling). Immediately the six riders gained ten seconds on the field, a gap that was to be hard to extend, as the likes of Eric Wohlberg (Sierra Nevada) and Henk Vogels (Navigators) were keen on trying to bring it back. Between the efforts of Wohlberg and Vogels, the gap did come down, but with no other teams in the bunch having the numbers or horsepower to help out at the front, eventually the break won out and before long the gap had gained another 30" on the chasers.

By the last lap, the gap had come down again but it was too late. Abraham took the sprint from Jones, with Gaggioli taking third place. Back in the bunch, dual Tour de Georgia stage winner, Gord Fraser, took the bunch sprint for seventh place.

Riders will now hang around down south until Sunday for the Roswell Criterium, which carries a $15,000 prize purse.
