Smith on top after TT win

By Shane Stokes, irishcycling.com

UK rider Leigh Smith this morning took over the race leadership of the Greenstar Gorey 3 day, winning the 4 kilometre time trial and so moving ahead of the rest of the field. The Milton Keynes CA rider was the only one to crack eight minutes in the undulating test, covering the distance in a time of seven minutes 59.93 seconds. Compatriot Daniel Martin (CC Giro), who went close to winning the opening stage yesterday, was 5.03 seconds slower, while Scot Willingham (Sanchez-Metro CRCA) was third.

Leinster Junior team rider Ciaran Kelly was best of the Irish in fourth, finishing less than a second ahead of former FBD Milk Rás winner Stephen Spratt, now making a return to racing. Junior rider Maurice O’Brien (Kanturk Credit Union), Ruairi Mitchell (Naas Team Rubex) and Padraig McCarthy (Bray Wheelers) completed the top eight.

The Greenstar Gorey Three Day continues this afternoon with 60 mile road race, taking in four laps of a 15 mile circuit.
