Day 3 - May 11: Road Race, 124 km / 77 km

Maher, Ollerenshaw take out final day road races

By Sam Nainoa

Women: Cal's Maher uses brutal home course to propel her to win

In perhaps the toughest collegiate road race of the year due to the size of the peleton, the high quality of competition and the challenging course profile, Kate Maher of the University of California at Berkeley captured the NCCA Collegiate National Champion Road Race title Sunday on a brutal course that saw the main pack of every race group cut in half by the end of the first lap.

Both women's divisions completed 77km/48 miles or five laps of the 9.6-mile hilly loop that featured a two-mile steep climb up McEwen Road at mile 6.7, several fast chicane sections and rolling roads that allowed for little recovery time.

Maher finished in a time of 2:42:49 after pulling away from Christina Ruiter of Fort Lewis College with 200 meters to go. Ruiter, who finished 9 seconds back, is relatively new to road cycling after being an adventure racer and may have started her sprint too soon as Maher was patient showing her experience with a ferocious jump.

"Christina went early in the sprint and is amazingly strong. My legs are tired from yesterday's time trial so our team let other people work and tried to have as many of us in the front near the end," said Maher, who is pursuing an advanced degree at Berkeley.

The duo had dropped the remainder of the lead group the final time up the McEwen Road climb and appeared to be working well together, but at 1km to go Ruiter began taking longer pulls, which played into the winning strategy of Maher.

Ruiter, an Exercise Science major, said she started riding bikes after doing adventure races and appeared satisfied to earn a podium spot, "I just wanted to pull ahead of the chase group and Kate stayed on me, we both pulled and of course I wanted to win."

Rick Crawford, the Fort Lewis College cycling coach and frequent online contributor to cycling websites added, "We still need to teach her the finer points of cycling but she is a national-caliber athlete. To get somebody like Christina who is super-talented is really gratifying."

Megan Monroe of the University of Wisconsin at Madison stood out and showed herself early as a possible threat as she set a fast tempo whenever the road went up and strung out the front group. Maher and several other leaders took notice of this and began to mark her. Monroe finished in fifth place behind Stefanie Graeter of Berkeley, who improved by 30 places over her 2002 finish to take third in 2:43:21. Andrea Dvorak of the University of Virginia finished fourth in 2:43:24 and was also prominent up the climbs.

While there were several regroupings at the front of the race as the chasers consistently tried to regain contact with the leaders every lap after the climbs, the front group never contained more than 15 women at any given time. This is a testament to the toughness of the course as a total of 81 women lined up for the start under near perfect Northern California conditions.

In women's Division II action, Allison Beall of the University of Idaho simply rode away from the field after an early attack by Heather Edwards of St. Louis University.

"It wasn't a planned attack, we just picked up the pace on the first lap. We both looked around after the hill and didn't see anyone so we kept riding steady. Then, on the third lap she was gone so I kept going," said Beall. Beall came across the finish line solo in 2:46:24. Edwards finished second in 2:48:38 and Kate Stange of Brown University finished third in 2:49:14.

Maher repeats in omnium

The women's Individual Omnium saw familiar faces on the podium as Kate Maher's win in the road race today clinched her overall victory in Division I. She finished with a total of 162 points and constantly talked about working for her Berkeley team rather than her own aspirations when asked about her plan for the omnium jersey. Christina Ruiter finished in second with 138 points and Julia Oh of Harvard finished in third with 97 points. Lauren Gaffney of Vanderbilt University won the overall title in Division II with 141 points and said she was surprised but happy to win. Allison Beall, today's road race champion, took second place with 137 points. Nichole Wangshard from the University of Northern Colorado finished third with 120 points.

The Individual Omnium tested riders' all-around abilities as it was based on finish points earned in both Friday's criterium, which was flat, windy and fast to favor a power rider or crit-specialist, and also today's road race, which favored a rider of great climbing ability.

Men: Oregon State grad student Ollerenshaw takes men's road race

The men's events were also races of attrition that featured major moves every lap with the three strongest riders in the Division I race fighting hard the last 1km to give Doug Ollerenshaw of Oregon State University the road race title in 3:45:39.

Ollerenshaw and Bryan Smith of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, who finished second in 3:45:47, bridged up to Tyler Wren of Princeton just after the McEwen climb the last lap with 5k/3.1 miles to go before the finish of the race, which was contested over eight laps for a total of 124km/76.8 miles.

Ollerenshaw, who is trying to balance cycling and graduate school for mechanical engineering and also help to rebuild the cycling program at Oregon State, spoke with a large smile and was happy with his victory, "Bryan did good work but I wanted it bad. It's amazing--I can't believe it yet. This is my biggest result for sure."

Wren had been on a solo breakaway for almost two laps after dropping Ben Haldeman of Berkeley. They had worked together for the previous two laps to stay in front of the chasers by a gap that hovered at two minutes. Once Ollerenshaw and Smith reached Wren they worked together until 1km to the finish when all three slowed down and began looking at each other, at one point jockeying for position like track riders. At 500 meters to go Wren appeared to struggle from his huge solo effort earlier and couldn't hang on as Smith was the first to jump, taking Ollernshaw with him. Ollerenshaw immediately countered and looked firmly in control with 100 meters left.

Normally this may have been the perfect distance to initiate the sprint, but today's finish was uphill and the wind had picked up by the end of the two men's races. Under these conditions Ollerenshaw was able to wait until the final meters and take the win by eight seconds.

Fourth place across the line was Anthony Colby of Fort Lewis College in 3:46:16 and fifth went to Ben Jacques-Maynes of UC Santa Cruz in 3:46:19. Ollerenshaw benefited from good teamwork when his teammate Barry Wicks constantly put pressure on the peleton up the McEwen climb for several laps. Wicks also followed Matt Dubberly of Berkeley and a race favorite on an attack on lap five. It was here, when the leaders caught these two, that the counter-attack of Wren and Haldeman went off the front to set up part of the race finale.

Second place Smith shows great promise as a cyclist as he has ridden a road bike for only a short time. His athletic background is as a hockey player. "I felt good at the end and I thought I could win the sprint. Looking back on it, I should have waited, but I'm happy about my finish. Things have gone well for me considering I've only been on the road bike for two years," Smith said.

Wren was equally satisfied with his result and said that he had given everything in the race and tried to hang on in the finishing sprint. "The last five kilometers were hard and I was getting a few different time checks about the chasers behind me. When [Ollerenshaw and Smith] finally caught me I was running on empty and hanging on for dear life, but I gave everything I had," said Wren, the current Division II NCCA Mountain Bike Champion and recent finisher of the Tour de Georgia as part of the Colavita-Bolla professional team.

The first pass through the feed zone was an inspiring scene as all 131 cyclists were shoulder to shoulder across the entire road with hundreds of supporters and spectators spread out along the entire length cheering enthusiastically.

The men's Division II road race (seven laps) was also thinned out early on as the climbing cut the field in half followed by a hard early tempo. This suited the race winner Kris Hedges of Johns Hopkins University who soloed in for the win and who was also part of the time trial champion team on the second day of competition.

"Coming through the feed zone some guys got antsy and picked it up, but I attacked on the downhill. I had about 20 seconds and a Dartmouth rider tried to come across but I didn't want to wait for him so I just kept it rolling," Hedges said.

Robbie King of Colorado College finished in second and Ted King of Middlebury College finished in third.

Road win propels Ollerenshaw to omnium title

Doug Ollerenshaw of Oregon State University won the overall Individual Omnium for men's Division I with 259 points highlighted by his win in the road race. Ollerenshaw said he was surprised to win the overall because it was only a remote hope before the road race. Ben Jacques-Maynes of UC Santa Cruz finished in second with 247 points and Matt Dubberly of Berkeley finished in third with 201 points.
