Turpin gets his first
Ludovic Turpin scored his first victory as a professional with a solo escape in today's stage 2 of the Route du Sud. Turpin left two breakaway companions behind, moving clear of Christophe Le Mevel (Credit Agricole) and Ludovic Martin (Jean Delatour) in the closing 10km and holding enough of his advantage to fend off the late charge from the peloton.
The day was marked by hot temperatures and a number of riders suffering as a result on the hot roads of southern France. Martin himself saw his work in the breakaway wiped away after being forced to stop twice in the closing kilometres with painful leg cramps. As Martin tried in vain to stretch his legs and get his body working again, Maryan Hary (Brioches La Boulangère) launched a counter attack from the main field, sweeping past on the final uphill rise of the day. Hary was also pushed to the line by a fast-finishing Philippe Gilbert (FDJeux.com), as the young generation of French pros proved themselves eager to impress in advance of the national championships at the end of the month.
As Turpin took the time to savour his first ever victory, the Cofidis team of race leader Janek Tombak did its job in controlling the field and protecting the Estonian's overall lead. With the short stage race already half over, the serious push begins Monday with a 34km individual time trial between Saint-Gaudens and Montrejeau, and the culminating day of climbing to come Tuesday.
