Day 4 - July 14: Festina Tour Alpine Valley Road Race

The Festina Tour Alpine Valley Road Race came down to a three-way contest with Belgian Danny In’t Ven riding away from race leader Viktor Rapinski (Belarus) and American Adam Bergman to take the win. The race was dominated by a select group of twelve riders which rode away from the field on the fourth lap of this grueling ten-lap, 100 mile race. The riders in the break eventually built a lead of seven minutes over the main field until In’t Ven, Rapinski, and Bergman pulled away with more than 10 miles remaining.

The Alpine Valley race course features several steep climbs which, combined with the hot temperatures, tested the willpower of the riders by the latter stages of the race and attrition amongst the field was predictably high. But it was In’t Ven who looked fresh and strong as he crossed the finish line, besting the effort of Rapinski who won here in similar fashion in 2002. Bergman continued his impressive showing after being plucked from the amateur ranks in mid-season this year to ride for the Jelly Belly/Carlsbad Clothing professional squad.

Rapinski is well on his way to defending his overall title at the International Cycling Classic and it will take a determined effort to claim the yellow jersey from his back. It remains to be seen whether a team will be able to mount a challenge for him as the racing continues. Tomorrow, the race moves to the MGA Proving Grounds near Burlington for another 100-mile affair.
