Day 12 - July 22: Noodles & Company Lake Front Road Race

Rapinski unstoppable at Lake Front

Reporting by Superweek

Viktor Rapinski (Saturn) reasserted his control of the 2003 International Cycling Classic with a dominating win at the Noodles & Company Lake Front Road Race on a cool and windy day near downtown Milwaukee. Rapinski joined a select group of 14 riders who broke away from the field within the first ten miles of the race and attacked late along with Jackson Stewart (Ofoto-Lombardi). The two riders rode away from the lead group over the final 30 miles and lapped the remnants of the main field. Rapinski then pulled away from Stewart on the last lap to cross the finish line alone. Adam Bergmann followed up his strong fourth-place finish at Holy Hill yesterday to take third in front of the remnants of the earlier breakaway.

The Lake Front course is a short four-mile loop that twice ascends the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. Because the early breakaway included representatives from each of the professional teams in attendance, there wasn't much interest in serious pursuit during the first half of the race. Several large chase groups did eventually emerge with the frequent climbs and a stiff wind off the lake helping to split up the field. The first chase group briefly began to close the gap on the leaders, but in the end all of the groups stayed apart and the gaps widened.

The victory for Rapinski gives him what is likely an insurmountable lead over Harm Jansen in the overall standings. With only five races remaining, Rapinski is bidding to become the first back-to-back winner at the International Cycling Classic in recent memory. Tomorrow, the racing continues in Green Bay with the Oneida Bingo & Casino Title Town Challenge.
