Fraser and Teutenberg sprint to victory

The 2003 Redlands Classic was greeted by light hail and rain Wednesday morning, as the women's opening stage was delayed when the weather moved in. Scrambling to take cover, most opted for jackets and gloves for the first few turns of the eight lap course.
From the beginning, it was an unremarkable race, as both the gloomy weather and looming days seemed to overshadow the action. A few notable surges came at the head of the field when the pack crested the highest point en masse, but even those faded on the back stretch.
Only at the midway Queen on the Mountain competition did things take shape, with Dede Barry (T-Mobile) and Ina Teutenberg (Saturn) slipping off the front to lead the race. As the weather cleared and clothing was shed, those two riders got away and stayed away with four laps to go.

"For us it was an ideal situation," said Barry. "I just worked as hard as I could in the breakaway, just to gain as much time as possible. It's a really good situation to be in, to have as many girls up front as possible before the mountain stages tomorrow."
Teutenberg beat Barry in a sprint to the finish, winning her second circuit race in as many tries. Her Saturn team did not chase, and neither did T-Mobile, hoping that Rona-Esker's Genevieve Jeanson would carry the load.
"Genevieve didn't have any teammates in the break," said Teutenberg. "Which was good for us, because maybe she had to work more than she wanted to. It helps to tire her out before the end of the week."

Jeanson held on to her overall GC, but the top 5 is now crowded with T-Mobile and Saturn women, all chasing at her heels. "We wanted to limit the damage today," said Jeanson. "But it was a hard race. It is a new course, we did not race it last year and it was pretty challenging. Tomorrow's going to be a hard day, too."
The men's race got going under sunnier skies but with a wind running up the slopes of the foothill neighbourhoods lining the course. At times it provided a welcome tailwind, but at the start-finish line it was blowing directly across the peloton. Gord Fraser (HealthNet) was grateful for the conditions, winning a field sprint ahead of Ben Brooks (Jelly Belly) and Chris Horner (Saturn).
"It was a good sprint," said Fraser, noticeably happier after the race than he was all throughout the Solano Bicycle Classic. "I like those sprints with a crosswind. It favours guys who can put a little more effort in their position."

A small break of four riders got away mid-race, never quite leaving sight of the field. At a consistent 30 seconds throughout, Jelly-Belly's Mariano Frieoicu, Mike Sayers (HealthNet), Frank Maples (Green Mountain Sports), and David Clinger (Prime Alliance) were all working together, but could not put more time into their gap.
"I was leading out Brent Dawson for a sprint at about 4 laps into it," said Frieoicu. "From then on I just kept going. It was rolling easy at first, but then Dave (Clinger) got it going up the climbs. I wish it would have gone up to a minute and a half, but that would have jeopardized Saturn too much."
Trent Klasna and Horner did much of the organizing in the field, letting two Kissena riders get away on a half-lap effort only to be reeled in on the descent. Frieoicu came back in to the main bunch, leaving only Clinger and Sayers at the front.

"When Clinger came up to me, he was a little bit stronger," said Sayers. "I was ready to go pull for pull with him, but I couldn't get a break."
At the feed zone on the last lap the duo was caught, bringing the men together and setting up for a field sprint. Teams began on the high side of the course to position for a windy, slightly uphill finish.

Into the last corner with almost a kilometre to go, first Jelly Belly, then HealthNet, then Navigators took bursting leads of the pack. Saturn was inside, helping themselves to a wind block, with Horner and O'Neill riding up the gutter.
"Horner just put everything in the gutter," said Fraser. "Him and Nathan O'Neill both, just to keep themselves out of trouble. I just rode those guys to the finish. It got a little helter-skelter, but I knew Horner was going to try to stay out of trouble. Saturn executed a perfect strategy today. They just let that break dangle, they did not open themselves to any new, fresh attacks, and then they brought it back on the last lap. It was perfect."
