Tenacious Stetina caught on the line

A truly valiant effort from Bolder, Colorado native Peter Stetina (VMG-Felt) came to a dramatic end on the streets of Bedford, when the soloist was caught just one hundred meters to the finish line. Stetina had gained nearly four minutes on a forty rider chase group but succumbed to the group's efforts with the line in sight, as Jamie Driscoll (Fiordifrutta) powered to victory.

"It was a pure headwind and a false flat and without this I think I could have taken the win," said Stetina. "All losing did was make me mad and I'm going to come back tomorrow and win. It's on, this is my race now."

Following Driscoll home in the reduced field, a result of strong head winds and tough terrain, were Sheldon Deeny (Sakonnet Technology) and David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast).

"I was dying hanging onto the chase group while Kelly Benefits and Johan Brunyeel teams were doing all the work to catch Stetina," said Driscoll. "I don't know where my sprint came from but I am really surprised to win here today."

The yellow jersey leader Steven Van Vooren (Johan Brunyeel Cycling Academy) was surprised to have been presented the prestigious award for the third consecutive stage. The Belgian maintains a three seconds advantage over Keven LaCombe (Kelley Benefit Strategies-Medifast) and Christoff Van Heerden (Konica Minolto) in the overall standings.

"I'm a marked man, but after what Stetina did today I think he'll be the marked man from now on," said Van Vooren, who landed the leading role on the opening prologue and expected to have to give it up on the climbing stages. "I'm very happy to be leading this event.

"My team worked really hard today to hold onto it, but I'm not sure we can do it again tomorrow were the climbs are more difficult," continued Van Vooren.

The 165-kilometre Stage 3 was made even more epic when strong winds and rain threatened the international field at the morning start. While the sun broke through the clouds, neither the gusting winds nor the many kilometres ahead were enough to hold back cycling's Under 25 riders from chasing their vision of a stage three victory.

The sprinters were given their chance to play in the stage's two intermediate sprints before beginning the arduous ascending at the foothills of the Allegheny mountain range. Second place of general classification, Keven LaCombe continued to lead the sprinter competition as a result of the points along route being scooped up by two separate, early breakaways.

The peloton veered onto Highway 30 by mid-race, a historically significant route that the event was designed to follow along the Forbes Trail, forged in 1758 by British General John Forbes and the young Colonel George Washington.

The world's strongest Under 25 climbers rode past a plentiful following of fans, cheering as they battled against one another over the Tuscarora Summit's first King of the Mountains climb. Stetina (VMG-Felt), descendant of a long line of bike racers in the Stetina family, proved true to his natural ascending ability when he stormed ahead of the peloton over the first mountain pass.

In doing so Stetina became the virtual race leader, as he gained a three-minute lead over his nearest competitors. "I was feeling really good over the first climb and rollers heading into the second climb," said Stetina.

The actual man in yellow, Van Vooren, was feeling the tension after missing the initial break away. "We weren't catching him quite as fast as I wanted to," said Van Vooren. "I had some asthma problems on the first climb so I was worried there that we might now catch up. But we did and luckily the climbers didn't go as hard over the second climb so I was able to get to the top."

The chase behind Stetina shattered the field into several groups, but a chase group of 30 riders found one another before the start of the second significant climb. Stetina continued to increase his lead over the now 40 chasers, riding first over the second KOM on Sideling Hill, an elevation gain of 2,500 feet.

"The false flat drag combine with the head wind was really hard," said Stetina. "Nature was against me today but I still showed everyone what I can do and I hope next time it will be in my favour."

The young peloton descended at speeds of 80 km/h in a successful chase led by Van Vooren and his Johan Brunyeel Cycling Academy team.

"Honestly, with one kilometre to go I thought I still had it," said Stetina, who started a grueling sprint to hold on to his slim 10 second lead with 500-meters to go. "I think the last little up hill drag is what did me in."

The gap was officially closed with one hundred meters to the line, courtesy of Van Vooren and his team's efforts. The Belgian team received much needed assistance from teams Kelley Benefit Strategies-Medifast and Konica Minolta, both of whom have a general classification rider in the top three and interested in pursuing the overall lead.
