A new start: The Tom Danielson diary 2005

After his ill-fated stint with Fassa Bortolo in 2004, likable American climbing specialist Tom Danielson looks to have found a more conducive home for 2005 with Lance Armstrong's Discovery Channel team. Follow his diary on Cyclingnews as he rides alongside the Boss as part of Discovery's ProTour arsenal.

Giro d'Italia: May 11, 2005

Good quawking at the Giro

Only 17 more stages to go! However, it seems like we have already raced a week because we had to get here so early...three days before the race!

So far Discovery Channel have enjoyed a good race. Our leader, Paolo [Savoldelli], looks very good, and thanks to a strong prologue and high finishes in the sprint stages he is high in the classification. There's good team morale as well.

Personally, I have just been sitting back and absorbing tons. This race has a very different rhythm than the other races I have done. I am really enjoying the racing, minus the crazy finishes. Crazy for me, anyway. My peloton 'quawking' (Lance calls positioning 'quawking'), is improving. In the category 1 quawking (just before a climb or between 20km and 10km to go) I am right in there. However, in the hors category quawking (within 10km to go) there is much room for improvement!

We still have quite a way to go before the mountains, but it looks like there are some hard days ahead. I'll try and conserve as much as possbile to be strong for 'il falco' (Paolo) in the mountains, as we all have confidence in him.
