Whazzup Christophe? Moreau Mashes To Maillot Jaune

When Frenchman Christophe Moreau (Festina) rides hard, he always hangs his tongue out like the whazzup guys in that beer commercial. So what was up with Moreau at today's TDF Prologue in Dunkirk was that his win in last months Dauphine Libere' showed the lanky, powerful Festina man that he may have the form and the experience to better his 4th place on the Tour De France podium of last year.

"I felt great today and gave it my best effort I am really happy how it turned out, said Moreau at the post-race press conference. "But the Tour still has a long way to go and a lot of mountains and Lance Armstrong is very strong."

Moreau blasted to a solid win in Dunkirk today, donning the coveted Maillot Jaune after a strong ride on a windy, overcast day. Today is the first time a French rider has had the TDF leader's jersey since Laurent Jalabert in 2000. Moreau's runner-up, finishing 3" behind was a very surprising Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano (O.N.C.E). Pretty in pink was the tune today for O.N.C.E; placing three riders in the top 10 and 5 out of the top 22 shows that they will be a force to be reckoned with at the 2001 Tour.

Four seconds behind in 3rd was defending champion Lance Armstrong (USPS). "That's OK (that I finished 3rd) said an upbeat Armstrong. "Moreau is one of my friends; he's a good guy too and he deserves to be there."

Finishing just behind Lance, clad in his new German champion jersey, an obviously in-form Jan Ullrich (Deutsche Telekom) was 4th, which has to be encouraging to the German, who knows that 2001 must be his year to unseat Armstrong. It's now or never for Ullrich and the man from Merdingen looks like he's up to the challenge.

Today was a bad day at the beach for last year's prologue winner David Millar (Cofidis); he crashed in the penultimate bend and lost 42" while on a very rapid pace, while Moreau's Festina teammate 24 year old Florent Brard, the newly crowned French TT champ, had a great ride for 5th and a visit to the podium to don the Maillot Blanc (Best Young Rider jersey). Festina also captured the team classification, 7" ahead of O.N.C.E for yet another podium place for the team that's always on time. Today's biggest losers were probably Fassa Bortolo with poor rides by hopeful Tour rookie Ivan Basso and team leader Francesco Casagrande.
