It crosses the Appenin mountains with the highest point being the ski resort town of Abetone. The race was dominated like many this year by the Vellutex team who attacked hard on the climbs. The best of the Australians arrived at the Abetone (Allan Davis, Simone Gerrans and Gene Bates) in the 2nd group which never regained the lead group.
