The first day of the 24th edition of the Route du Sud was split into
a morning 102 kilometre road stage, and an evening time trial of 14.9
kilometres. Fassa Bortolo's Alessandro Petacchi, winner of two stages
in the Tour of Luxembourg, was the first leader of the tour, after he
won the morning stage from Francaise des Jeux' Frederic Guesdon and
Rabobank's Leon Van Bon. They were part of a 14 rider breakaway that
escaped with 30 kilometres to go, finishing 10 seconds in front of the
bunch.
