Night 5 - January 17, 2000 What a resurrection! Scott McGrory and Jimmi Madsen are now in second spot, on the same lap as leaders Martinello and Kappes. Australian McGrory had a fall early in the race, was neutralized for a while but came back on the bike. The Australian-Danish duo are too far back on points though, but there is a winning chance if they gain a lap on the leaders. But look out also for Baffi and Villa who soon will get a bonus lap when passing 400 points. Poor Kurt Betschart, the other injury stricken rider, had to abandon the race and will be gone for the rest of the season. A hard blow for a cyclist that has six day racing as his major occupation, and source of income for that matter. Partner Bruno Risi is still in the race as a "reserve". A sixth place is normally nothing to brag about, but for Spanish World Champions this race means that they are at last doing a decent race this season after a disappointing opening. Like the day before (Monday) when they won one of the chases, with McGrory and Madsen winning the other.
