Defending champion Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) makes his return to Portugal for 40th Volta ao Algarve and faces a handful of challengers to claim his third overall win with a high quality field having assembled for the race.

World Champion Rui Costa (Lampre Merida) will be showing off his rainbow stripes in his home country as he looks toward a top-ten finish at the Tour de France. Two-time winner Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) is back at the race and is hoping to record more victories in 2014 and will be surrounded by a strong team.
