European Championships: Archibald takes Omnium title
Ganna rides to individual pursuit gold medal
Katie Archibald (Great Britain) held off Kirtsen Wild (Netherlands) to take the UEC Track European Championships Omnium title Saturday in Berlin. Archibald took maximum points in the Tempo race and Elimination race and then minimised Wild's gains in the point race to beat her rival by seven points. Italy's Elisa Balsamo finished third, 25 points behind Archibald.
The gold medal is Archibald's second of the championships after she won the individual pursuit on Friday. The Scot also took silver with Great Britain in the team pursuit.
"I’m happy - it felt like a bit of a cheat last year," Archibald said of defending her 2016 title. "It was post-Olympic year the first time I won it and I thought ‘have I gotten away with it?’, so I’m happy to come back and defend."
In other racing on Saturday, Italy's Filippo Ganna took gold in the individual pursuit, beating Portugal's Ivo Oliveira by nearly three seconds. Domenic Weinstein (Germany) took the bronze. Poland's Alan Banaszek won the men's Points race ahead of Niklas Larsen (Denmark) and Maximilian Beyer (Germany). Dutch sprinter Jeffrey Hoogland beat Joachim Eilers (Germany) Quentin Lafargue (France) in the men's 1km time trial, while Denmark's Trine Schmidt took gold in the women's Scratch race ahead of Tetyana Klimchenko (Ukraine) and Evgenia Augustinas (Russia).
Speed events closed out the evening, with Kristina Vogel (Germany) taking gold in the women's Keirin ahead of Simona Krupeckaite (Lithuania) and Liubov Basova (Ukraine).
