Stage Thirteen - Friday 18 May
121 kilometres, flat stage
Bluffers guide: Into Piedmont, for the calm before the storm. This is but a short hop into wondrous, lush, wine producing Langhe. It’s not unlike Chiantishire, but has a fraction of the tourists, paying a fraction of the price. A miniature version of the Tour of Piedmont, it’s likely to come together for a big old gallop.
Buon appetito: No-brainer. Here they “hunt” the mythical white truffle, a Piedmontese delicacy which happens to be a culinary miracle. If you’ve never tried it your life really is incomplete. No, really…
Local hero: Michele Acquarone (Giro director) – The new Giro chief was born in San Remo, just up the coast from Savona, where the peloton begins its journey. Acquarone can look forward to a sprint finish like the ones he’s witnessed many times at the end of the ‘La Classicissima’, Milan-San Remo, at the end of today’s 121 kilometres jaunt through the Langhe hills.
Bergonzi says: “On the face of it a sprinter’s stage, but it’s really hard to call at this stage because they’re starting to tire and there’s a big week ahead.”
