Zirbel kicks off Nature Valley with a winning time trial

Tom Zirbel (Bissell) did what he does best by storming into the Nature Valley Grand Prix leaders' jersey after winning the opening 9.6 kilometre Riverfront time trial in a time of 12:36. Defending Champion, Rory Sutherland (OUCH p/b Maxxis) cruised in for second place, sandwiched between Zirbel and his teammate Ben Jacques-Maynes.

"I was a little surprised with my time trial today because I didn't know how my legs would recover from Sunday's effort," said Zirbel who plugged his way through a lengthy breakaway in the TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championships last weekend. "I felt really flat yesterday and I was just banking on them coming around this morning. The power was there, but it didn't feel good today."

The short time trial lent itself well to the individual specialists and the explosive sprinters. Zirbel finished with a 13-second advantage over Sutherland heading into day's second stage, a dimly lit and technical criterium held in St. Paul. But the biggest concern for both riders are the numerous sprinters sitting just 30 seconds behind them.

"Those sprinters amaze me," Zirbel continued. "When they want to go fast and they can smell the overall victory in all the time bonuses, they always find a way to pull out something a little extra. Everyone knows I struggle in crits, that's no secret. I expected some sprinters to do well today which is why I could've gained one minute and still be uncomfortable."

There are a total of 35 seconds in time bonuses available between three intermediate sprints and the finish line making the stage two criterium a play ground for the speedsters to take over the race lead. The evening's favorites to move up the ladder by virtue of seeking bonuses include teammates John Murphy and Karl Menzies (OUCH p/b Maxxis) and Frank Pipp and Andy Jacques-Maynes (Bissell).

"It's a different course then we've had before, with some changes," said Sutherland. "We wanted to concentrate on the time trial to see how it shuffled out. It is very tough to lead this whole bike race until the end. The big gaps happen in the road stages so I think we are in the best position we can be in to start the race."
