Omega Pharma-QuickStep directeur sportif gives his verdict

What is cool?

According to Omega Pharma-QuickStep directeur sportif, Brian Holm in relation to cycling at least, a rider can be judged as being cool by the way he carries himself both on and off a bike. With his impressive quiff, and self-described "German U-Boat captain beard" the Dane muses over his top-five coolest riders to Cyclingnews in this video.

Holm's scope goes way back to the 1950's and someone who also had an impressive pompadour hair style, Jacques Anquetil, right through to the modern era and 'Le Dandy' David Millar. As for the rider who closes out the top-five, we won't give it away but Holm warns it will be controversial.

Watch Brian Holm's top-five coolest riders of all time below.

Lance WAS cool...gotta agree. Though lots of the guys from that era were cool. I think it was their sunglasses

Yea, those shin-high white socks he wore were sooooo cool (sarcasm). And how he wore his cycling shorts down to his knee (maybe to hide the syringe marks on his quads?). So cool. And how he couldn't pronounce Act-O-Whatever. Now that was cool. But the ultimate in cool was how he would NEVER give an interview in French during the Tour. Now that's not just cool, it's plain C-L-A-S-S-Y.

Lance was a product of his era, and for all of you "fair weather fans" - sorry, but to h**l with you. In his day he was the biggest name and hero cycling had and he got millions out just to ride their bikes. I raced in that era, I never made it big and always suspected it was dirty, but that did not make the racing - and Lances exploits - any less exciting. Yeah, he was cool. Now he's old news, just like EVERY SINGLE OTHER RIDER WHO PLACED IN THE TOP TEN in the TDF. Let it go and let's move forward instead of following McQuaid and living every day stuck in the irrelevant past.

Isn't the reason most people don't want McQuiad any more precisely because he wants to gloss over & forget the past?

Francesco Moser a Hollywood star? Well....well...well...that's kinda funny, cause then nowdays it's a falling star as he presents him around (he's a guy from the mountains, doesn't care of fashion or attitude but just want things straight).
Jan-Erik Baars More than 1 year ago
a lot of Hollywood stars end up on a farm, don't they ;-) For sure Checco was one of the best looking pros around. Brian Holm is the coolest DS!

On the bike he is a dull, boring (But effective) diesel. Off the bike Wiggo is pretty cool however !

Maurizio Fondriest. Period.
Andrea Cerri More than 1 year ago
Yeah I was thinking to Maurizio also, maybe not in the top five but he was cool.
