The votes are in, the spreadsheets are crunched and we have winners in our 2001 Readers Poll. Thanks to everyone who voted for their favourite riders, photographs and equipment. We were overwhelmed by the response: over 1700 of you took the time to fill in the form even though there was nothing in it for you other than the satisfaction of making your opinion felt.
Over the next few days we'll present the winners, starting with seasonally-appropriate cyclo-cross and product categories and culminating on January 9 with the awards for Best Performance and Rider of The Year. We think some of the results will surprise.
One from the 'no surprise there then' box as Belgian cyclo-cross demi-god Sven Nijs swept the board, taking over 50 percent of the vote. Long-time Nijs rival Erwin Vervecken was second and the growing popularity of cyclo-cross in the US is marked by the recognition of Tim Johnson and Marc Gullickson in third and fourth positions. Mario De Clerq rounds out the top five, and it would be hard to make a case for any of those riders not deserving their place.

Hanka Kupfernagel may be the dominant female cyclo-cross rider in Europe, but Lyne Bessette's successful takeover bid for the US branch of women's 'cross this winter clearly caught the imagination of Cyclingnews readers.

This was one of the largest categories in terms of the total number of candidates, with over 100 'others' that landed less than five votes each. But the clear winner was Campagnolo's Record 10 speed groupset with almost a quarter of the vote in this very diverse field. We counted separately the new Record carbon cranks which nevertheless came in fifth, making the total Campagnolo vote over twice that of Shimano's Dura-Ace group. Mavic's popular Ksyrium wheels took the bronze and the top five is rounded out by Giro's Pneumo helmet.
