Woodruff and Meyer win stage race titles at Mapelag Resort

Nested on the shores of Little Sugarbush lake, deep in the northwoods on Minnesota, Maplelag resort was host to race #9 in the Minnesota State Championship Series. Although the cross country event was the race that counted for series points, racers in all divisions provided great racing action for the specatators who enjoyed near perfect conditions in the three-stage event.

Time trial

The three mile doubletrack with a few short sections of technical singletrack provided the course for the opening time trial event. Pro men's rider Brendan Moore (Rochester Velo) took top honors finishing just over the 10 minute mark with fellow Pro TJ Woodruff (Momentum Endurance) seven seconds behind in second. Chris Fisher (Rochester Velo), Paul Hanson (Bear Naked/Cannodale) and Lance Beuning (Grandstay) rounded out the podium. Jennifer Meyer (Rochester Velo) took the expert women's race with Coorey Cogan (Gopher Wheelman) in second.

Afternoon racing saw short track action around the resort complex. Previous classes provided some of the most exciting racing action in years and the expert race was no exception. A solid group of seven riders broke free from the pack. Pro rider Doug Swanson (Trek/VW) took the early flier but was unable to open a gap as Hanson, Woodruff, Fisher, Moore, Sam Oftedahl (Silver Cycling) and pro Dan Swanson (Grandstay) kept the race in check. Each rider took turns at the front before realizing it would be nearly impossible to shake the strong field. At the bell lap, Dan Swanson went to the outside on the first corner, making his way to the front. Moore tried to set up Fisher for a attack to bring Fisher to the front but Swanson held his ground to take the win. Fisher grabbed second with Hanson, Woodruff and Doug Swanson taking the podium spots. Meyer claimed her second win on the weekend in the women's expert.

With a tough cross country course on order for Sunday that featured quick steep drops along the lake shore followed by relentess power climb, the general classification was wide open. Into lap one, Woodruff took the lead but by the end of that first lap, Hanson was up at front pouring it on. On lap two, Brendan Moore had a go with Hanson in two as Woodruff had troubles on the singletrack. Biding his time a half dozen places back, Oftedahl rode his own pace, steady and smooth, as he slowly picked off riders to bridge the gap up to Woodruff. Oftedahl went on the attack, making his way to the front with Woodruff who recovered from early race mishaps. Oftedahl and Woodruff would work together to build and solid gap over Fisher who helped pull Moore back up to the third spot. On the final lap, Woodruff went to the front on the final singletrack section and was able to hold his position to the finish to take the win and claim stage race honors. Final podium for the cross country and stage race was Woodruff, Oftedahl, Moore, Fisher and Hanson.

In the women's cross country event, 2006 U23 National Champion, Jenna Zander (BearNaked/Cannondale) rolled to the line and went on the attack early on to score an impressive win by over 20 minutes over eventual stage race winner, Jennifer Meyer. Upon completion of her race, Zander went on to ride another lap and record and unofficial time of two hours, 17 minutes which would have placed her in the top 10 of the men's expert field. The MNSCS concludes September 23 in St. Cloud.
