Houltham & Pryde take finals and series victories

By NZMBA

The fifth and final round of the cross country series took place yesterday at the Auckland BikePark, Woodhill. There was some exciting, nail biting racing on the sand-based track particularly in the men's and women's pro-elite categories, to the delight of the large crowd.

With only one point separating Stuart Houltham of Taupo (23) from the younger (18 yrs) Jason Clement of Levin going into the finals, they both knew they had to ride hard to win the series. Clement took an early lead on his own and it wasn't until the fifth lap when the more experienced Houltham caught Clement and then managed to pass him, finishing in a time of 2h 12m 25s. (Pro-elite men had six laps to complete, each lap being 7 km long.) The win on Sunday gave Houltham the 2003 National Mountain Bike Cross Country title. This makes Houltham's third consecutive win of the series, something he is very happy with. Clement, although disappointed at narrowly missing out on the title (44 seconds), is still proud of his second place overall, with this being only his second year competing at the pro-elite level. Wayne Hiscock of Wellington took third place overall.

The Auckland race also had UCI points attached to it (International Cycling Union). These give the top ten finishing competitors international points so that they are eligible to race in international competition. One of NZ's top Cross Country riders, Tim Vincent (Nelson), who is based in Switzerland during the northern hemisphere racing season, traveled to Auckland with the aim of finishing in the top five to earn these precious points. In the end Vincent had a great race to finish in third position at the Auckland round - surprising even himself as he is not at top fitness yet. Vincent is aiming to be at peak condition in the next few months when the World Cup races start.

In the women's pro-elite series there was an extremely close race between Susy Pryde (2002 Silver Commonwealth Medalist) and Sadie Parker-Wynard (Commonwealth Representative). Parker-Wynard led for the first two laps followed closely by Pryde and then Pryde took the lead. Throughout the entire race these top cross country riders were virtually glued together and only at an uphill part near the finish, Pryde managed to find some extra strength to pull away from Parker-Wynard to finish first by nine seconds.

Both from Auckland and good friends they hugged each other after the event and commented on how they both really enjoyed the race. Pryde was extremely pleased at her performance as she is not such a technical rider - something that Parker-Wynard excels at and both agreed that the Auckland course was very technical - leaving no room for a drop in concentration, making it a physically and mentally demanding track. Pryde leaves New Zealand on Wednesday for training and more overseas competition - she is planning on racing in about six world cups this year and is aiming high with this being an Olympic qualifying year.

The win on Sunday gave Pryde the 2003 National Mountain Bike Cross Country Series title, second place overall to Parker-Wyndard and consistent series riding by Ingrid Allsop-Bell (Auckland) gave her third place.

Auckland saw a large turnout of competitors especially in the expert category which had 132 entries. The riders now have the National One-Off Championships in Blenheim to prepare for on the 5 and 6 April.
