Canberra Off Road Cyclists Winter XC Series, Race 4 Majura Pines.

Report by Julia Graczyk

A cold crisp early morning warmed to a beautiful Spring day, with a light breeze providing near perfect conditions for race 4 of the CORC Winter cross country series. One hundred and fifteen riders lined up for the start of the race. The newly thinned forest compartments at Majura provided the course setter's with a little less choice than is usual, but the riders seemed to enjoy the course set. The course was a relatively short but varied lap combining flowing single track and undulating fire road sections.

In the Senior Men's race accomplished cross country runner and rogainer Adrian Sheppard showed that he can also ride a mtb with a lot of speed and technique. Sheppard rode a consistent race, to take the lead on the fourth lap (of six laps), and finish almost two minutes ahead of his nearest rival Shane Paton, with Jason Watts only a second behind in third place.

In the Senior Women's race Julia Graczyk and Janine Ridsdale rode together for the first three laps, with a faster final lap giving Graczyk first place. Mountain bike orienteer, and current World Rogaine champion Julie Quinn was third.

Some exciting racing unfolded in many of the other categories. In the Veteran Men's race a fit and fast Rod Higgins made it three wins from three starts, with Paul Atyeo making a strong return to racing to finish second, less than half a minute in arrears. The Sport A Men's race was also closely fought with a strong final two laps giving Steve Peddle first place, and fifty seconds advantage on Michael Johnson, with Daniel Schlage in third place a further twenty five seconds back .

Other category winners included solo 24 hour race entrant Richard Davis in Masters Men, Adair Ferguson in Masters Women, Luke Graydon in Under 15 Men and Trish Garrett in Veteran Women. Thanks to Tony Scott, Tony Winterbottom and David Baldwin for timing the race, and to Rosie and Chris Barnes, Simon Tilley, Julia Graczyk, Jacqui Clynes, Shane Paton and John Graydon for their help with registration and course pack up.
