Stage racing returns to British Columbia

By Sue George

In only its second year, the BC Bike Race is drawing a top-notch field of endurance specialists for seven days of team competition. Back to defend their titles from the inaugural edition will be Americans Chris Eatough and Jeff Schalk of Trek / VW. Eatough is the six-time 24 hours of Adrenalin World Solo Champion while Schalk has won all four rounds of the National Ultra Endurance (NUE) series in 2008.

Mountain bike legend and 24 hours of Adrenalin World Champion Tinker Juarez (Monavie-Cannondale) will partner with team-mate Mitchell Peterson. Both hail from the US. Monavie will field a second team inclucing Jason Sager and Bart Gilliespie.

Canada will bring several strong teams to challenge the top Americans. 2004 Canadian Olympic Team member Seamus McGrath is using the race as training for Beijing. He'll partner with long time Canadian National Team member Chris Shepherd, and they will race as Team Felt / Team Canada.

U23 Pan American Champion and two-time World Championship Team Relay champion Max Plaxton will team up with Team Rocky Mountain Bikes partner Andreas Hestler, who was a 1996 Canadian Olympic Team member, three-time Trans Rockies Champion and five-time Canadian National Champion.

2003 La Ruta de lost Conquistadores winner Marvin Campos is making the trip from Costa Rica and will partner with Manuel Prado to form Team La Ruta / Sho-Air / Economy Renta Car. The pair should be well suited to race together after training together for the past three years.

On the women's side, one of the favorite teams is Team Taint Slo with American racers Sara Bresnick-Zocchi and Kelli Emmett. Otherwise a Team Giant racer, Emmett has been having a stellar year racing the North American pro circuit.

In total, 101 men's teams, 34 mixed teams, 15 women's teams, 46 80+ (Combined age) and 11 100+ (Combined age) teams - all two-person teams - will take to the fray. Another five four-person teams will add to the fray.

The race commences June 28 and runs through July 4. The first two stages are the longest while the next four stages average 67km per day. On the final day, racers are treated to a 47km journey on technical trails in the mountain bike destination town of Whistler.
