Absalon and Stropparo take GimondiBike victories
Even in the wet conditions rival competitors weren't able to prevent world champion Julien Absalon from claiming the fifth Gimondibike with an average speed of 26.8 km/h. On the wet autumn day Absalon, Simoni, Zoli, Lazzaroni and Deho fought from the very beginning - creating a group which pushed their opponents to the edge. Zoli Yader (KTM International Team) kissed goodbye any shot of victory around the 20th kilometre when he was struck down by a puncture. As athletes ran the special trial in Monterotondo, Cattaneo (Asd Team Oprandi Bike Bracca) was able to make some ground on the runaway leaders.
In a really uncertain race everyone waited to pass through Santuario della Madonna del Corno cronorace, an ideal place for an assault. It was here that Simoni launched his attack, but he wasn't the only rider to advance as Absalon caught the new MTB Italian champion, while Deho, Lazzaroni and Cattaneo weren't far behind.
The battle continued until 1.5 km out from the finish line, when Absalon gains the lead and holds off all challenges to the line. Deho Marzio (Gs Cicli Olympia) finished second while third went to Gilberto Simoni (Asd Scott Racing Team).
Meanwhile in the women's race Annabella Stropparo claimed her fourth GimondiBike victory with a dominating start to finish lead. The long awaited duel between Stropparo and Eva Lecner failed to materialise after the latter suffered a puncture. Michela Benzoni (Gs Bicimania Lissone Mtb) took second place from Blaza Klemencic which Daniela Bresciani (Gs Bianchi Agos) in fourth.
