Jongewaard and Colson look good for Games

Adelaide's Chris Jongewaard was determined to claim first place in the National Series cross country round today in Nannup, Western Australia. The 26 year old now holds the lead position for the Commonwealth Games selection race in three weeks' time in Melbourne. "I had to get out in front," admitted Jongewaard.

"It went well for the first lap then I had a bit of trouble getting started," he said, adding, "Second lap was good and I just hung onto it until the end."

"The course definitely challenged me. I'm not too much of a climber," he said. "During practice I didn't think there was too much climbing but obviously when you race it it's different."

The national champion took over the lead from Peter Hatton in the first 50 metres and forced the pace to the 40km course to finish five and a half minutes ahead of his closest rival Perren Delacour from Sydney. Delacour got the advantage early when two riders fell while tussling for position. Peter Hatton (Sydney) and Joel Healy (Victoria) lost ground when they fell on the single track section of the course. Delacour rode with Victoria's Alistair Farley before making his move on the last lap. Farley finished just one minute behind in third place. Hatton finished in a disappointing seventh after a puncture forced him to stop.

Melbourne's Emma Colson won her first round in the national series by winning the women's cross country. The three Victorians, Colson, Jenni King and Claire Baxter rode together for the first lap. Baxter proved her strength during the tussle but was outwitted by the experience of Colson and King. King went on to finish just 30 seconds behind Colson, proving her mechanical difficulties in round one would not haunt her in this round.

Colson and Jongewaard hold pole positions for the Commonwealth Games selection race in December; riders will race on the Games course at Lysterfield, and many believe a front position would be an advantage. Downhill racing begins tomorrow with world junior champion Amiel Cavalier and Perth's Sam Hill going head to head. In the women's race the Australian contingent will be competing against world cup series winner Sabrina Jonnier of France.
