Day 3 - March 20: Downhill
Hannahs dominate the DH Championships

In controversial circumstances Mick Hannah (Haro-Thor) has won the Australian National DH title whilst his 16 year-old sister Tracey has made it two from two by coming second behind French superstar Sabrina Jonnier. Another DH dynasty was represented in the Junior field where Liam Panozzo took out the hotly contested U19 category with a time that would have put him 6th in the elite men.
While these three took home national champion jerseys representing the fastest in Elite, Women and Junior DH riders in Australia, the controversy which rang throughout the pit area was concerning some Elite riders purposely holding back so as not to win the supposedly coveted national jersey. Given the strict UCI regulations which dictate the size of sponsor logos on a national champion's jersey, some of the major companies gave their riders orders not to win. The rules stipulate that a national champion must wear his/her champions jersey in World Cup qualifying and finals and for this reason, sponsors stepped in to ensure their freedom to advertise on their star riders wasn't compromised.

In between qualifying and finals the pits were abuzz with rule books, phone calls to team headquarters and tough decisions being made by the riders. One rider who was very outspoken on the issue was the rider who clocked the fastest time of the day (in qualifying), Nathan Rennie (Santa Cruz-Utopia-Troy Lee-Red Bull).
"I have orders from a number of my sponsors that look after me quite well who need area on my jersey to promote their product. If I tried to win today then I couldn't have been loyal to them whatsoever - it's a catch-22 which sucks. The UCI are being very stubborn with the rule and something needs to change - there are so many options but they are not willing to negotiate."
"If the rule stays the same as it is now... I am never going to be national champ. I've got a world championship and a world cup overall under my belt... but not this one."
With possibly two other riders in the top-ten 'holding back' for similar reasons as Rennie, no-one is quite sure who the fastest DH rider in Australia is on the day of the Australian National Championships. In any case, Mick Hannah was the fastest rider in the final, hammering a severely chewed up track by clocking a time only 1.07 seconds slower than Rennie's qualifying time.
U19 Men

Liam Panozzo (Fox-Intense) laid some demons to rest after breaking his collarbone before the World Champ's last year to bring an amazing summer-campaign to an end by taking the Junior category by a full second over 2004 winner Amiel Cavalier (Dianese-Giant). "Finally," exclaimed Liam after his run, but the 17 year old has much more to look forward to in the future as his winning time would have given him 6th in the Elite category! The youngster has a World Championship in his cross-hairs and despite juggling year-12 commitments in 2005 wants to take home the '05 World Junior Championship. One thing's for certain, he's got the big-boys looking over their shoulder...even if he does have three essays due when he gets back home.
Elite Women

The women's race was taken out for a second consecutive year by Sabrina Jonnier - winner of the '03 World Cup Series. However, the international super-star knows that it is no picnic coming to race the Australian Championships as 16 year old Tracey Hannah is getting faster and better under pressure in every race she does. Jonnier, girlfriend of Aussie-speedster Sam Hill, loves to race in Australia, "It is a lot different to what we have in France. The dust is so different and I crash so many times!" Jonnier remarked.
Regarding the race she commented, "The track got harder throughout the day, I made a few mistakes but it was pretty fast. It is great racing with Tracey, she's really nice."

Thanks to Jonnier's French nationality, the Aussie title was passed on for the second consecutive year to Tracey Hannah who made it a clean sweep for the family from far Nth Queensland. Tracey, whose riding and confidence is coming along in leaps and bounds, put together a great day of riding to finish only 6.5 secs behind the French powerhouse.
"In practice I didn't feel so good," said Tracey. "My qualifying run was awesome...I didn't pedal at the bottom because I didn't have the energy! My final was good, I kept it together and tried not to be nervous. I was thinking so much about my race run though that I left my gloves at the bottom! It has helped heaps going to America because I am able to ride better under pressure."
Elite Men

Mindful of the difficult predicament the riders were put in by the UCI ruling and the sponsor backlash, the race organisers put up a cash prize for the fastest qualifier to give a rider who was ordered not to win the final a chance to show their true form. With cash up for grabs, many of the elite field smashed their qualifying run, with Sam Hill (Ironhorse-Madcatz) crashing in the first corner and burning the rest of the course to qualify third. Nathan Rennie put together a flawless run to prove a point and smacked down a devastating 2:42.40 while Jared Rando (Giant-Fox) proved that he is Mr Consistency by posting a 2:46.35 to qualify 2nd.
As mentioned above, the break between qualifying and the final was marked by a lot of contemplation, international phone-calls and rule interpretation and things were so unclear for some riders that they hadn't made their mind up if they were racing for the win until 2 minutes before the start.

Regardless of that, there was a course to get down and one that had been completely transformed by around 500 runs between the first qualifiers and the last rider down the hill. The dusty Eildon track took many victims this afternoon with its deceptively soft corners, fine dust and many trees. The cream rose to the top though with Ben Cory (Commencal-Dragon-Manitou-TLD) pulling out a scorching run on an old bike to take 5th while fellow Canberran Jared Rando held it together to take 4th.
Third place was taken by the winner of the 4X, Jared Graves (Yeti-Oakley): "I was surprised, my final felt so much faster than my race run, but it was a second slower. I warmed up well and pinned it. Sometimes when you know are having a good run you back off and take it a bit easier to not throw it away...but I'm pretty sure I couldn't have got down to Mick's time, it was pretty crazy. The track was killed."
On the topic of the jersey, Graves commented, "If Nathan had pinned it, it would have been a hard one to call...it would have been very interesting."

Second on the day went to Nathan Rennie who looked to oscillate between absolutely destroying the course in fine style and having fun, "Going into the final I approached it the same as every other. I tried to pin it but I wasn't phased by little mistakes."
"I tried to go just a little bit slower than my qualifying time, which I knew was a good time, and hopefully slot into a lower position. It was a matter of good luck a bit of calculation and I ended up in the most desirable spot given my position."
The ride of the day, all politics aside, was genuinely done by Mick Hannah who put together a storming 2:43.47 on a mashed up track. It seemed an impossible ask for Hannah, who broke his chain in the final run at the Eildon National Championships last year, broke a chain in the 4X on Friday, and had his bike in the stand for most of the day today. "The bike was sweet for the final - Marcus at Manitou and the guys at Vic MTB did a lot of work to it - it was the best its been the whole season!"
In the final, Hannah was a full 5 seconds clear of second placed Rennie and seemed happy with his winning time given the way the day had played out. "Yeah, I'm stoked. There were a few issues with the jersey today but that all got sorted and I was second-fastest on this track today. With the condition of the track, I think it would have been pretty close really.

"I walked a bit of the track before my race run to give me an idea of the condition of the track - I held back a bit in my race run, hit all the turns smooth and pedaled when I can. I'm proud to be national champion."
So despite the forces of the UCI and big sponsors clashing to deny us the satisfaction of knowing exactly who the fastest riders are, youngsters Liam Panozzo and Tracey Hannah are absolutely smashing whilst Mick Hannah can rest easy tonight in the knowledge that his race time on a chewed track was quite possibly unbeatable.
