2005 NZ Community Trust Mountain Bike National Series

Downhill #4 - Blenheim, NZ, January 29, 2005

In the week leading up to this race there was 30ºc heat most days, making it difficult but not impossible for track designer and builder Greg Leov, with the assistance of Justin and Nola Leov and the local mountain bike club, to put the finishing touches on the new track - ready for Friday practice day. The new track, located half way between Blenheim and Picton, had a bit of everything, from fast open sections, jumps and step-ups to tight off camber through native bush. It proved to be a very fast track with riders clocking times similar to Dunedin last weekend despite the course being longer by 500m. Nathan Rankin's fastest time, for example was only half a second slower at this round.

Practice day was dry and very dusty, and with overnight rain making for a slick access track and slippery course for race day, but it soon dried out under the hot, Marlborough sun and most riders improved on their first race time. Justin Leov, the local Blenhiem rider, showed once again that he is right on form, winning both of the races. Leov's main competitor, Nathan Rankin of Levin, will not go down without a fight, even racing with his arm in a cast after having broken his wrist last weekend in Dunedin during the first race. He went on to win the second race in Dunedin with his wrist only being strapped. Scott Sheldon of Christchurch continued with an excellent third overall placing, showing that the 23 year old is riding consistently well this year after having been plagued with mechanical problems in last year's series.

Check out the website www.mtbnz.org.nz more information on the series, points, etc.
