Almost 200 riders and teams braved the increasingly inclement conditions to tackle 6, 4 or 2 hours of Enduro racing as the Trek 6-4-2 series got underway on Sunday at Newnham Park in Devon.
Using an extended version of the classic course, used the day before for the first round of the Premier Mountain Bike Series, riders tackled mud, woods, moors and rivers - the latter gradually swelling as the promised rain set in soon after the 6 hour riders started at 10am.
Undeterred, the majority of the 6 hour riders battled their way to the finish, joined at noon by the 4-hour riders and at 2pm by the 2 hour competitors.
Leading the way in the 6 hour category were previous day's Elite Women winner Jenny McCauley and Scott UK's Nick Craig who managed six and seven laps respectively. Leading team Shokwave managed an awesome 8 laps, which in the circumstances was a great ride, whilst the Scott UK pairs team won their category with 7 laps.
In the 4 hour category, Ian Wilkinson and Lydia Gould headed the two solo categories, whilst Jay Spetch and Nikki Harris took the honours in the 2 hour version.
Elite 6 hour Nick Craig clearly enjoyed his winning ride. "There was a really good atmosphere with a lot of chat out on the course," said craig. "I was catching people and having a chat, moving on and catching someone else and enjoying a chat - it was like that all day. There is a much more relaxed attitude amongst the riders - with the Saturday racing as well, the weekend is a good all-round crack."
