Street and Thomas repeat solo victories

Josh Street and Tory Thomas repeated their 2003 victories when they took out the solo category in the Mont Australian 24 Hour Championships in Canberra yesterday. For the first time, the event saw official national championships jerseys awarded to the winners in the solo categories, who also took home $1000 each in prize money and plane tickets to the 2005 world solo championships in Canada next year.
On the 19km course in the pine woods of Kowen Forest outside Canberra, Street, whose long mountain bike racing career includes stints as both a top Australian cross-country racer and downhiller, hammered out 21 laps of the course for a total of 399km, beating second-placed David Osmond by a full lap. Graeme Allbon was third, and collapsed from the effort of chasing Street and Osmond for 24 hours and required medical treatment at the finish.
Tory Thomas defeated local endurance racing specialist Mel McIntyre in the women's event, with Julie Day taking third.
