12 Hours of the Hill of Truth

East Tennessee, October 25, 2003

5th annual 12 Hours of the Hill of Truth a big success

By John T Baker

It was sunny, gorgeous and warm for the 5th annual 12 Hours of the Hill of Truth mountain bike race this past Saturday. One hundred and forty-three racers lined up for the biggest mountain bike race in East Tennessee at 11 am Saturday morning.

By 11pm there was confirmation of returning solo champion Travis Hutchinson's successful defense of his title from 2002. He rode 14 laps (that's 112 miles of tight, technical singletrack) and could've gone for another if needed to seal up his victory. Quite an amazing effort!

The Woman Solo winner was Slow Spoke who turned in 10 laps while the open division was won by the menacingly named Army of Darkness. They not only rode 17 laps (136 miles) but team member Gerry Harms turned in the fastest lap of the race (38:30). He won a five pack of a very refreshing adult beverage for the feat.

There was heated competition in the Sport division. The appropriately named Kidz team (three members in their mid teens!) won with 17 laps. But the real competition was for 2nd through 7th places, with 6 teams all within a minute of each other.

The Recreational Division was won by Team No Love, who, despite their name, obviously loved riding 14 laps. The winner of the Veteran Division was Team Skunk Ape, who rode 12 laps.

Competition in the women's team division was spoiled by an unfortunate crash that caused Team Knox Revolution to lose valuable time to the winner, Team Wahoo, who rode 11 laps to victory.

The Huffy jump was won by Flyin' Jon Magnuson. No one else got within striking distance of his 13'+ mark. The Huffy toss was won by an unnamed individual whose friend/girlfriend/wife/significant other picked up his prize in the aftermath. He got a lucky bounce and no one else got close to his mark. This writer can attest to the fact that this year's sacrificial Huffy was the heaviest bike anyone could remember hefting. Its remains have been committed to the Huffy monument on display at Haw Ridge Park.
