Team Dried Plums/Orbitz Team wins 24-hours of Great Glen
Gary Contic & Dave Currie take duo championship
Gary Contic and Dave Currie scored a major victory this past weekend at the 24-hours of Great Glen in the shadow of Mount Washington, NH. Contic and Currie battled several inches of rain in 12 hours, muddy course conditions and tough competition to capture first place. The two were first-time teammates.
"Dave did the LeMans-style start and put in some of the fastest laps. He really set us up right from the start," said Contic. "The conditions were tough. All of the single track became unrideable at some point and some of the puddles were big enough to swallow both wheels up at the same time."
Contic is preparing for his 2nd solo 24-hour world championship competition in two weeks. When asked is riding solo is harder than riding with a partner said, "I don't think I can say a Duo team is much easier that Solo. The recovery is quicker but during the race I had to ride faster and the short breaks in-between don't do much, knowing I have to get right back out there soon. Dave Currie in his first 24 hour race performed like he has been doing them for years."
Two riders on Dried Plums sister amateur team, Harpoon/Rage scored big finishes as well. Two solo riders - Reenie Greene and Francis Blesso - took second place in the women’s and men’s category respectively.
"I was starting to wonder if there was any point in torturing myself for 16 more hours. Then I decided I would just keep going at turtle speed and try to make it as close as possible," said Reenie.
