Lincoln Plating Spring Classics #1

Branched Oak Lake, Area 7, Raymond, NE, April 5, 2003

Spring classics hit the dirt; sprint finish goes to Wilkins of Team Kaos

By John Jr Lefler

The 2003 Lincoln Plating Spring Classics moved to Branched Oak Lake Area 7 Saturday for the first cross-country mountain bike race of the series. For the second week in a row, racers experienced chilly temperatures that hovered in the mid-40's for most of the day. Despite the brisk conditions, a motivated group of (46) area cyclists took advantage of pristine course conditions.

As Nate Woodman (SNORT), who competed in the Single Speed category offered, "It was fantastic! The dirt was perfect, fast and one gear is fun."

Expert Men: Drag Racing at the Lake?!

In the first official XC MTB event of the 2003 season, Kevin Wilkins (NHS/UNMC/Team Kaos) and Stephen Jarrett (HIGHGEAR/LBC) set a blistering pace completing seven laps on the 2.75 mile course in 1:05:06. The quick tempo was laid down early on in the contest.

"Darin Schlake (NHS/UNMC/Team Kaos), Steve and I had a train going for the first four or five laps," Wilkins explained. "Then Steve went to the front and the pace went up considerably."

The jump by Jarrett left Schalke off the back and put Wilkins in a one-on-one situation for the final two laps. "I came through not intending to pull to hard, but Darin popped off the back," said Jarrett. "Kevin and I kept a good pace and I figured it would come down to a sprint finish."

In fact, the race did come down to a sprint finish as Wilkins made his move in the final 200 meter stretch just edging Jarrett at the line. "I tried to jump before the last turn because I knew if it came down to a drag race it would have been a different story," Wilkins said.

A story that Jarrett was hoping might have developed. "I was hoping that the sprint would start late, but he got around me and I had to go off the trail," Jarrett explained. "It was a good sprint, though."

In the Expert Masters 35+ race, Paul Chapman (Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth) started off his season with an impressive first place finish powering through the 19 mile event in 1:07:04.

Sport Categories

A fast and furious bunch of Sport riders motored around the singletrack at Area 7 with times under 60 minutes for almost every rider. The five lap event displayed an impressive display from the up-and-coming racers.

"There's not a lot of climbs, so I just wanted to keep it steady," said Paul Ullman, who finished first in the Sport Men race.

Ullman completed his five laps followed by the Single Speed tandem of Nate Woodman and Clarke Dolton of SNORT at 0:53:16. Rounding out the top four was Team Revolution rider Sean Craig who edged teammate Mike Bartels by 14 seconds in the Sport Masters 35+ event. Robert Miller topped the Clydesdale category with a time of 57'17.

Beginner Categories

In an effort to erase the bad memory of a DNF last year at the Lincoln Plating Spring Classics XC MTB, Scott Wiebe was looking for redemption Saturday morning.

"I wanted to come back and at least complete the race this year. This is nice because I could ride strong and compete," beamed the first place finisher.

Other top finishers in the Beginner categories included: David Draus (Masters 35+), Valerie Gortmaker, Rod Kumke (Clydesdale) and Richard Kumke (Juniors). Little Richard gave a great effort covering his 3-lap event in 40'29!
