Does doping work?

Just about anything, including oxygen and water, is bad for you in sufficient quantities. WADA is well behind the eight-ball when it comes to doping, they, the IOC and major sporting organisations just don't want you to know it. Consider with the revenue generated by major sporting events, or the revenue generated by the major sports and pharmaceutical companies and then think about who is winning the game? When you consider the amount Gatorade pays Tiger each year is double WADA's annual budget, you begin to realise the obstacles that WADA faces.

People want to see records broken, they want to see winners, they want to see inhuman feats. Professional sports is based on the hypocrisy that it’s an even playing field and where the strongest, fastest, most talented, hardest working athletes are victorious. Occasionally they are, but who can be sure?

WADA identifies performance enhancing drugs by purchasing drugs that are freely available in the market, then doing research to identify 'markers' in blood and urine which suggest dug abuse. Steroids are the best but only commercially available roids detectable by WADA. HGH is near impossible to detect. You can use drugs months before competition, gain the training benefit then compete 'clean'. It's not black and white.

Marion Jones was only caught because her coach betrayed her, not because of WADA's ability as a drug control agency. How many more drugged-up athletes are out there, flaunting the rules, winning the prizes, earning the endorsements? Many!

Scott Spark ultralight bike

Loved the article on the Scott Spark LTD. However, I couldn't help but notice that the math didn't seem to work for this project.

If the numbers in the article are correct, the Spark LTD off the rack weight is 9.20 kg (with XTR, etc.). Your bike, which was admittedly far more expensive, weighed 9.06 kg (about 1/2 pound lighter - what is the cost per gram for that level of savings?).

But the cranks weren't noticeably lighter and didn't shift as well as XTR, and the tires were essentially unusable for everyday riding. So you swapped out the tires for the Wolverines, which added 300 g. That makes your ultra-light, more expensive (but still not as good shifting) build 9.36 kg, which is 160 g heavier than the more usable off the rack configuration! Go figure.

Scott Spark ultralight bike #2

I read your article today regarding the latest "project" bike - as a middling XC racer myself, I thought it would be interesting to see how the big boys could cut weight on an XC ride.

You started with a bike weight of 20.26 lb., and after spending who knows how much, you impressively got the bike down to "mouth-watering" 19.98 lb. A reduction of 0.28 pounds, or 127 grams. You're kidding, right? You won't admit to the amount of money you spent for a weight reduction that equates to less than 2%?

With the Spark LTD retailing for around $8k, I bet you could have saved thousands by simply not having that extra slice of cheesecake the night before the ride. Maybe next time you could pick a bike that could stand to lose a bit more weight than such a high-end machine.

Cadel stays with Silence-Lotto?

I reckon Karl’s point is even more pressing when you see that even Ridley have given Silence Lotto "the flick". It is difficult to understand how the team management operates when it leaves McEwen out in the cold, to fight the sprints completely unsupported, and Cadel Evans at the other end equally on his own.

Cadel stays with Silence-Lotto? #2

Because as he said in the Tour: "Don't touch me."

Looks like everyone has taken him at his word...

Best of luck to the guy, he's going to have another tough season without good support.

Vuelta, Giro, Tour triple

Why is Contador always being referred to as going for the record of fastest triple? Merckx won the Giro and Tour in 1972 and then the Vuelta and Giro in 1973 back when the Vuelta was in April.

All round classification

Can you please explain this category for the Vuelta?

It is not the G.C. but a separate scoring category where it appears the lowest score wins.

I don't think the Tour or Giro has this and I'm not familiar with the scoring.

Editorialising / opinion within articles

Lately your excellent web publication appears to be engaging in the rather tabloid practice of opining and editorialising within articles.

Examples are statements like Cadel - choking in the final ITT of the TDF and today, this from the Vuelta "…as Astana miscalculated and let the leader's jersey slip off of Levi Leipheimer's shoulders" after Astana obviously handed over the leaders jersey for tactical reasons.

If you look at the footage of the bunch coming, Astana were not working, and could easily have brought the bunch in under the required time to keep the jersey. This interpretation is further supported by the fact that CSC and Caisse d'Epargne went to the front to work when it was obvious Astana were going to let the lead change.

Please return to your previous excellent practice of providing a high quality cycling based journalism and do not slip down into a lowest denominator tabloid mag. The deterioration in quality has been marked since the new owners appeared and you run the risk of losing long time readers who have stayed with Cyclingnews for many years now.

Do it twice or until you get it right

I was amused that somehow Mark Cavendish still thinks its remarkable that he has crossed the line first twice in the US and is only credited with one win.

I have the utmost respect for his sprinting prowess which is akin to Usain Bolt's sprinting. It is amazing to watch. But, sprinting for a win after holding onto a car or if you are really a purist, having your mechanic hang onto you in order to speed you at twice the rate of the rest of the racers to reduce a 1-2 minute gap back to the lead peloton is not a win. It’s cheating.

If he'd been a GC contender, he would have been tossed out of any race in the world.

Enjoy this one Mark, you earned it in the right place, "The show me state". The motto comes from a devotion to simple common sense.

Olympic mountain biking

Totally agree, as a Welshman in Oz, and a rider for almost 20 years I was disappointed at the coverage here in Oz, or rather the lack of it; especially after waiting 2 weeks to see it.

A little creativity could have got a camera on a rider or the trials bikes that were following the group, and then we could have got a real idea as to the technical nature of the course, and the severity of the pinches. Some stats would have been nice too; speed, rider info, course topography, course layout with relative positions of riders etc.

Perhaps London will raise the bar, here's hoping; shame its 4 years away.

Say it isn't so Lance!

The Internet world is abuzz with this ‘rumour’ of Lance's impending return to the peloton. All I can say is Lance DON'T DO IT. Listen to me, the ASO, UCI, etc. will (I did not say might, could or would consider, but will) manufacture a positive doping test on you and destroy your legacy.

They more than anyone will be cheering for this return; this is their opportunity to get you back under their thumb and destroy the only rider who has beaten them at their own game. Even if they know the "A" is negative, there will be a rumour leaked from that reputable French lab [tongue in cheek there in case anyone missed it] of a positive sample, you will be kicked out of the Tour and there will be no end to the "he did it now, he did it then" accusations and calls for you to give back your yellow jerseys.

The "B" will clear you and that story will be buried on page 20 of that French rag in the smallest possible print buried under ads for Parisian hookers and cancer sticks. You are untarnished your 7 stand alone as the greatest Tour achievement. Go run the marathons, date pretty starlets, you have earned this retirement with your name intact. Please don't do this.

Armstrong come back

Now that Lance Armstrong has announced his intentions to return to cycling and probably with Astana, what does this say to the Tour aspirations of Contador and Levi?

Do they really think that Contador and Levi are going to line up and become a helper for Lance? Contador is a former Tour winner himself and did not ride the Tour this year because of the Tour holding him and his team out.

Is it to be believed that Contador will now say, "oh, no problem, I will ride in support of Lance to win #8?" I would find that hard to believe. We might be seeing Contador leaving Astana if he is relegated to a team rider in support of Armstrong; and what about Levi? Not too mention, Klöden!!!
