Albert, Compton drop from top after leading rankings entire season

Czech champion Zdenek Stybar (Telenet-Fidea Cycling Team) and Dutch champion Daphny Van den Brand (ZZPR.nl-Destil-Merida) moved into the lead of the UCI cyclo-cross standings after Sunday's penultimate World Cup round in Roubaix, France, unseating Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) and Katie Compton (Planet Bike) from their familiar positions atop the men's and women's rankings respectively.

Stybar won the World Cup round in Roubaix, France and earned 300 points, bringing the Czech's season total to 2,570 points. Entering the Roubaix World Cup, previous UCI leader and world champion Niels Albert led Stybar by 40 points, but an eighth place finish only garnered Albert 130 points, dropping him to second on the season standings with a 2,440 point total.

Albert had stood atop the men's rankings the entire 2009-2010 season, but the world champion is still feeling the effects of a fractured rib suffered at the hands of a drunk spectator during Belgium's national championships on January 10.

Besides Stybar and Albert swapping positions at the top of the standings, there were a few shuffles in the top-10 due to placings at Roubaix. Dutchman Gerben de Knegt (Rabobank), sixth at Roubaix, bumped Belgium's Kevin Pauwels (Telenet-Fidea Cycling Team), 11th at Roubaix, from fifth position in the standings.

Erwin Vervecken's fourth place finish at Roubaix moved the 37-year-old Belgian up three positions into ninth place, his highest ranking of the season. Switzerland's Steven Heule, previously ninth, dropped to 10th overall while previous 10th place holder, the Czech Republic's Radomir Simunek, dropped to 12th.

For the women's standings, Daphny Van den Brand moved into the lead for the first time this season after finishing fourth in the women's World Cup event at Roubaix. The 190 points earned on Sunday increased her total to 1,732 and moved the Dutchwoman from second into first.

American champion Katie Compton, the leader of the World Cup for the entire season, dropped to third place overall after an occurrence of leg cramps prevented her from starting in Roubaix. She remains at 1,600 points for the season.

World champion Marianne Vos, third in Roubaix, moved from third on the standings into second with 1,660 points.

The Netherlands' Sanne Van Paassen remains in fourth place while Germany's Hanka Kupfernagel jumped from seventh to fifth place after finishing second in Roubaix, her best World Cup performance of the season.

(Updated) Louisville's bid to host worlds under consideration

There is a possibility that the UCI's Cyclo-cross World Championships could be held in the United States in 2013, making it the first venue outside of Europe to host the event. USGP director Joan Hanscom confirmed to Cyclingnews that she and partner Bruce Fina have submitted the bid to hold the event in Louisville, Kentucky in 2013.

Hanscom said that they've been keeping the bid quiet, but UCI cyclo-cross coordinator Peter van den Abelee spoke of the possibility to the Belgian media today. She was encouraged by Van den Abelee's statement that the US bid was the leader in the race to hold the event.

"It's pretty exciting," Hanscom said. "We've worked very hard to assemble this bid, and it was encouraging to read what Peter had to say."

She was also encouraged by the words of Belgian champion Sven Nys, who told Sporza.be that were the Worlds to go to the USA in 2013 he would continue to race until then.

"This is a boon for cyclo-cross, a major step forward in the internationalization of the sport," said Nys. "In fact, I considered retiring after the 2012 Olympics, but this would inspire me to keep going another winter even though I'll be 37."

The US has tried for several years to bring a cyclo-cross World Cup round to its shores, but funding such an event was complicated by the high start fees earned by the top male riders.

"Without a guaranteed gate [revenue] like you can get in Belgium, a World Cup isn't as financially feasible as a World Championship where riders are funded by their national federations to attend," said Hanscom.

"I can't imagine that a rider would refuse to go to Worlds if selected by his or her country because they were held in the US, so we overcome a bit of the obstacle of athlete participation by having a World Championship."

The city of Louisville has hosted the US Grand Prix of Cyclo-cross round for the past three years as well as hosting the masters US National Championships.

Hanscom said that the venue in the bid is a new dedicated cycling park planned by the city of Louisville.

Famed Dutch rider Adrie's son a champion in 'cross

For the last 30 years, when cycling fans would hear the name "van der Poel" their thoughts immediately turned to Adrie van der Poel, a steady force in the 1980s and '90s in both road and cyclo-cross racing. His road victories include the Tour of Flanders, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Amstel Gold, and stages in Tour of France. While in cyclo-cross, he has proven himself to be one of the most victorious 'crossers ever, with his greatest success a World Championship in 1996.

But as of two years ago, the name "van der Poel" has begun to take on a new reference, namely that of David van der Poel, Adrie's son. In only his second year of top level competition in the Junior division, 17-year-old David (Isorex Cycling Team) has been dominating the races. Of his 16 Internationally-ranked events this season, he has landed on the podium 15 times, including 10 victories. The one event where he missed the podium, he placed fourth. He is currently leading the UCI International classification by a significantly large margin, which is marked improvement over his last year's final ranking of 15th.

"It has been a great season for me so far," said the junior van der Poel to Cyclingnews. "I didn't expect it to be so good so I am really happy with my results."

"It feels really good. I like the attention people give you when you win. And the feeling when you cross the line is indescribable."

When asked if his dad had nudged him to be a cyclist, David said, "No. Not at all. When I was a kid, I liked to ride a bike. But I also played tennis and soccer. I was always busy with sports. But two years ago, I had to decide on one sport because I wasn't able to combine them all with high school where I study every day from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. My decision was to go with cycling because I thought I would be able to go the farthest in this sport. And I just like it better than the others."

Once David chose the bike, his dad offered his full support. "Of course he helps me a lot – gives me lots of advice. He knows a lot so it's good for me."

David's next event is World Championships this Sunday in Tabor, Czech Republic, where he is gunning for a win. "I think it will be icy with a lot of snow, so that should be good for me – it's quite technical. It will be a strange 'cross because World Championships are always a little bit crazy - especially in these conditions. I also think the riders who were in front in the big races, will again be in front there," said David. Three weeks ago, David claimed the Dutch National Championship title on a course similar to what is expected in Tabor, proving that he is indeed a favorite going into the big race.

In September, David will upgrade to the Under 23 category. Keeping his ambitions in check, he surmises, "Now I am one of the oldest riders and next year I will be one of the youngest, so it will be a big change for me. But if I keep training like this I think I will be able to do it well."

His dream is to follow in the footsteps of his dad. "He was quite successful. It would make me happy to also have cycling as my job. I can only hope I would be as good as he was," said David. When asked what it's like for the announcers to repeatedly say that he is the son of Adrie van der Poel, he quickly responds, "I am a little bit proud. I think it's normal."

Riders cannot use new Dugast tires on icy worlds course

New regulations put into place by the International Cycling Union on January 11 this year specifically ban the use of studded tires in cyclo-cross.

The UCI regulations on wheels (1.3.018) read "Wheels of the bicycle may vary in diameter between 70 cm maximum and 55 cm minimum, including the tyre. For the cyclo-cross bicycle the width of the tyre shall not exceed 35 mm and it may not incorporate any form of spike or stud."

The change is rumoured to have been introduced after the sport's governing body heard that Belgian 'cross star Sven Nys tested a new spiked tire by Dutch manufacturer Dugast called the "Diabolo" which incorporates metal spikes in the treads.

The Belgian news wire Belga reported Sunday that Nys had tested the Diabolo on an icy course in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and found them to be effective in providing grip in slippery conditions.

The upcoming World Championships in Tabor, Czech Republic are expected to be contested on a course which has been frozen solid by weeks of sub-zero temperatures, conditions in which spiked tires would be a great advantage.

Four-time world champ finding form in recent World Cups

After an unusually late start to the cyclo-cross season due to illness and injury over the summer, four-time cyclo-cross world champion Hanka Kupfernagel (Itera-Stevens) remains on target for the World Championships at the end of the month. Kupfernagel's second-place performance at the World Cup Circuit's penultimate round in Roubaix, France was solid proof to all the naysayers who have written her off earlier in the season.

"In Tour de PEI [Canadian stage race - June] I had one of my worst crashes. For a long time afterwards I had pain in my neck and head so I took some time off from racing for physiotherapy so I could fully recover," Kupfernagel told Cyclingnews.

In addition to her injuries sustained over the summer, she has had to deal with the flu and a breakup with her longtime life partner and trainer Mike Kluge who has played a major role in her cycling career for many years. "He is still supportive and comes with me to a few races. He is coming to the World Championships," said Kupfernagel.

While most of her competitors started their international-level racing October 4 at the opening round of UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup in Treviso, Italy, Kupfernagel didn't get going until a full month later. Her first competition was the second World Cup held in Nommay, France where she finished sixth. If it weren't for an untimely flat tire and her last-row call up she may have placed higher.

In the following three World Cups, she finished fourth. Usually a racer's first events back are not so successful, but Kupfernagel was adamant about returning to competition fully fit.

As the World Championships approach, Kupfernagel's thoughts are positive. "I am looking forward to it. I believe I will do my best there."

Based on her palmares of 31 national titles, nine of which were won in cyclo-cross, she has proven that she knows exactly how to prepare for the big events.

The names she considers possible companions on the podium are Netherlanders Sanne Van Paassen (ZZPR.nl-DESTIL-Merida), national champion Daphny Van den Brand (ZZPR.nl-DESTIL-Merida), and current world champion Marianne Vos (Nederland Bloeit), Czech Republic champion Katerina Nash (Luna), US champion Katie Compton (Planet Bike) and Belgian champion Sanne Cant (BKCP-Powerplus), with whom Kupfernagel is very impressed by the 19-year-old's near misses on the podium in the last few races.

When Cyclingnews asked Kupfernagel what she thought about her competitors such as Vos, Van den Brand and Van Paassen naming her as a possible winner, she mused, "Anything is possible in cyclo-cross. And if I won, it would be one of my greatest days."

Dutch Under-23 continues charge towards elite ranks with Belgian squad

Dutch cyclo-cross rider Micki van Empel has confirmed a two-year deal with the Telenet-Fidea Cycling team that will see him race with the Belgian squad from next season.

A former mountain biker who switched to 'cross in 2008, Van Empel, 19, leaves Dutch team ZZPR.nl-Destil-Prolease-Merida and will continue his progression towards the elite ranks during his tenure with his new team. He demonstrated his obvious potential with victory at the Superprestige round in Ruddervoorde, Belgium earlier this season.

Fidea's investment in Van Empel is a clear signal of the team's efforts to improve their prospects of future success in the elite category of the sport. The Dutchman's contemporary in the Under-23 category, Belgian Tom Meeusen, has already rewarded Fidea's youth-oriented strategy with several strong performances, including second at the Belgian Elite national title race earlier this month.

While he will continue to compete on the Under-23 circuit for the time being, Van Empel will now form part of the same squad as Belgians Meeusen, Bart Wellens and Kevin Pauwels, as well as 2009/2010 World Cup Champion, Czech Zdenek Stybar.

Van Empel is currently in Tabor, Czech Republic where he is preparing to compete for the Netherlands in the Under-23 event at this weekend's World Cyclo-cross Championships.

Conditions and course make a "demanding" track

On Thursday, riders from many nations previewed the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championship course in Tabor, Czech. One rider, favorite Zdenek Stybar, was pleased with what he observed.

"It is totally different than in the Czech championship a few weeks ago", said the Czech Stybar to Sporza.be. "There is much fresh snow on the ground. That is perfect. The track is demanding enough so the strongest can impose their wills on Sunday."

Stybar will face challenges from Sven Nys and Niels Albert among others.

Louisville secures first US cyclo-cross world championships

The 2013 world cyclo-cross championships will be held in Louisville, Kentucky, the UCI announced on Friday.

As part of the agreement, Louisville will also host the 2012 and 2013 world master cyclo-cross championships.

It is the first time a cyclo-cross world championships will be held in the USA and is thanks to the hard work of Joan Hanscom and Bruce Fina, who organise the US Gran Prix of Cyclo-cross in Louisville.

“This is thrilling news. We’ve been working for six years with the US Cycling National Team and six years on the USGP to further develop the sport in the US to the point where our riders can be competitive on a global scale. Hosting the worlds in the US is the next logical step,” Fina said in a statement issued by USA Cycling.

Despite most riders facing a transatlantic flight to take part, the big names in the sport are enthusiastic about racing in Louisville. Belgian cross star Sven Nys even said he would delay his planned retirement in 2012 so that he could ride in the 2013 world championships.

The course for the world championships will be in the Eva Bandman park, just a mile from the centre of Louisville. The venue is set to become a permanent cyclo-cross park thanks to support from the city of Louisville.

“I was impressed with the vision and detail of the plans to develop the area into a cyclo-cross race venue. The area, terrain and surroundings lend themselves perfectly to a major race venue,” UCI cyclo-cross technical delegate Simon Burney, who inspected the course, said.

UCI President Pat McQuaid, highlighted the significance of the decision to award the 2013 world championships to Louisville: “For the first time since this event was established some 60 years ago, the cyclo-cross world championships will take place in the United States, where the discipline is currently experiencing very strong growth. We are extremely happy with the award of this event as it is a clear illustration of the UCI’s strategy to globalise cycle sport. I would like to congratulate the promoters of this initiative, as well as the city of Louisville, and wish them the best of luck with their work.”

The world cyclo-cross championships will be held in Sankt Wendel, Germany in 2011 and in Koksijde, Belgium in 2012.
