Race 1 - December 26: Junior Men, 40 minutes

De Bie in footsteps of Uncle Danny

By Brecht Decaluwé with assistance from Gregor Brown in Zolder, Belgium

A Dutch coalition between Lars Van Der Haar and World Cup leader Tijmen Eising failed to hold Belgian Sean De Bie from his first ever victory in a round of the World Cup. Seventeen year-old Sean – who's a cousin from former world champion Danny De Bie – captured the win in front a home crowd on the auto-racing circuit in Zolder and held Eising from a third consecutive victory in the World Cup.

"This is a great victory," De Bie said. "I went for it in the final laps and I had noticed that Van Der Haar was struggling. On a climbing section, the people shouted to me that I was alone so I kept going hard. I don't think Tijmen stopped riding when he noticed I was gone."

De Bie moved to the front together with the two Dutch riders during the first half of the race. In the final laps, De Bie took over the command from Eising on the frozen course. Eising had to put foot down on the ground in on of the final technical corners.

"I stumbled on one of the last corners and then he was gone," Eising said.

The Dutchman remains leader in the World Cup rankings with a good margin of 25 points over compatriot Lars Van Der Haar.

"When Tijmen stumbled I lost two seconds and that was too much to close down. On the finishing straight, I went full-out without looking ahead and when I finally looked up, I noticed De Bie wasn't too far ahead and he wasn't looking back. When he did look back it was over for me," said Van Der Haar.

Behind the three leaders, a five-man chasing group battled for the remaining spots of honour. US Champion Zach McDonald featured in this group, tangled in a Belgian coalition. McDonald went on to finish sixth in his first World Cup race of the year.

"They [the Belgians - ed.] had to be at front, they were just kind of hanging there and I was there hanging with them. For me there was no plan. The goal was to stay near the front as long as possible," McDonald said.

The Zolder course was the home of the World Championships in 2002. Kevin Pauwels, then racing as a junior, won the title.
