Sarvary returns, King reigns

By Rob Karman

Two groups of Masters Women hit the course together for the day's third race. Women 45 plus champion Kathy Sarvary (Mid States Cycling Club) returned to the top step of the podium after a 9 year hiatus with a blazing ride that saw her almost catch the winning rider form the category that started a minute in front of her. "Today was a total surprise for me," she said. "I had kind of a rough season. I felt like there was a good race in me, but you know, everything just came together. It was just one of those perfect days for me, everything was hitting just right. I knew it was going to be a matter of just trying to maximize technique and minimize mistakes so I just tried to concentrate on that. It was just a lot of fun today."

In the Women 40-44 category, it was Suzanne King (Sunnyside Sports) taking home the stars and stripes jersey for the first time in her career. "The first hundred meters I was behind some slower riders but then it got worked out pretty quickly and I moved into the lead," said king. "It wasn't brutal in terms of exertion, but it was tricky technically. I switched bikes at least every lap and sometimes every half lap and even at that it only took a half lap to get sticky."
