Master Men

The 30-plus Master Men lined up with a particular fire. The sloppy course and large field meant a good start would be critical.
Off the front fired Idaho's Richard Feldman (Durance). He was challenged by Oregon's Shannon Skerrit (Trek/VW) who moved into the lead by the third lap. Feldman slipped behind Connecticut's Curt Davis (Cannondale/Wheelworks) for a brief respite, but then fired off another blistering attack that sent him off permanently, winning with a 40-second margin.
The 35-plus Master Men lined up with equal passion. More than 20 racers were listed as favorites, the start proved wild. After one lap, Ohio's Jonathon Card (Cane Creek) held a slender lead over a string of challengers. To the front came California's Todd Hoeffer (Sally Spicer) and North Carolina's Andy Applegate (CCA/Trek). The three battled for the remainder of the race until the final lap, when Hoeffer attacked hard in a muddy section and held it to the line. Applegate finished second, Card was third.
