Cometh the hour for Crawforth

Business as usual for Wyman

Jody Crawforth managed to fend off the threat posed by a quality field and conquer the windswept, frozen fields of Peel Park to take the British national cyclo-cross title. After weeks of speculation over who would take the coveted crown, Crawforth overcame the likes of Roger Hammond, Oli Beckingsdale and Paul Oldham to take the biggest win of his career.

A three-up sprint decided the podium, with Crawforth outlasting Oldham and Hammond, who finished second and third respectively. "It was so windy, it was so hard out there on your own," said the Arctic - Premier Racing Team rider, who fought Arctic winds on his way to the title, although this didn't seem to bother him, however.

"I quite liked the conditions out there, I like it a bit slippery and the technical stuff was just right, great course really suited my strengths I guess." Conditions on the day were neither favourable to the mud lovers or the hard and fast riders, with the course being frozen solid the previous day, with a slight thaw setting in. Completing the scene was an icy blast that scoured the open circuit.

Then there was the issue of some hardened 'crossers to contend with, which Crawforth was well aware of. "I was aware that Paul Oldham was riding quite strongly and that Hammond could pull anything out of the hat, but I was really confident. Like I said, it was so hard on the front in that wind, so I wasn't too worried about him getting too far away. I've been wanting to win this one now for quite a while and finally it was my day, brilliant!"

With the Championships being held in Peel Park, Bradford, the smart money was on local rider Rob Jebb, who won a National Trophy event there in 2007. Hot on his heels would be bronze medallist in '08, Paul Oldham, and Jody Crawforth. Defending champion Hammond was also back for another national crown, whilst waiting in the wings were Ian Bibby, Ian Field and of course Liam Killeen.

Ian Field fired the first shots, attacking immediately and quickly opening a six-second lead by the hurdles; Roger Hammond, Paul Oldham, Jody Crawforth and Ian Bibby were strung out behind him in full chase mode. Lewis Craven, Oli Beckingsale, Rob Jebb and Nick Craig made their way to the leading group.

By lap five, the 75 starters had been whittled down to a leading pack containing only five riders who were in real contention for that elusive gold medal; Crawforth, Bibby, Beckingsale, Oldham and Hammond. Local hero Jebb was just off the pace and fighting hard to rejoin the selection but he could make no inroads on the leading pack as the attacks came thick and fast over the unrelenting course.

Crawforth chose his moment to attack and opened a good 11-second gap which quickly put the rest on notice. From that point it rapidly became a race of three, with Oldham and Hammond joining Crawforth to keep the pressure on. Mountain bike stalwart Beckingsale put in a massive effort to make his way to the trio and put himself back into contention for the title.

Beckingsale's efforts soon began to tell however, and he once more fell off the back of the train, the 'elastic band' proving a little too lose for his liking.

As the trio hurtled through the last lap a sprint finish seemed more likely; each knew that the first off the steps would more than likely get the win and they fought tooth and nail for that position. With a huge roar, Crawforth appeared off the steps first, quickly followed by Hammond, but the lead was too great and Crawforth punched the air with delight as he took the much longed-for national title. Hammond eased up behind him and was passed by Oldham, who took second and left the defending champion in third.

Wyman resumes normal service

Helen Wyman wins

Earlier in the day it had been business as usual in the senior women's race, with Helen Wyman picking up her fourth consecutive national title. She led from the start, and despite a worthy challenge by teammate Gaby Day, had the race to herself and took the win with ease.

Day took silver, but the real battle of the day was for the bronze medal. Junior rider Ruby Miller had taken the initiative early in the race and gone in pursuit of the two world cup riders out in front. Despite having ridden in the Revolution Track Series the previous night, Miller looked strong as she tried to bridge the gap between herself and Day.

Despite her efforts Miller couldn't make any headway on the leading duo; meanwhile, experienced rider Sue Clarke dug deep and slowly reeled in the younger rider who started to look tired in the closing stages, her efforts obviously catching up with her. Clarke went on to grab bronze, and although not overly delighted with her ride she was happy with a medal nonetheless. Miller hung onto fourth and with it secured the national junior title.

After clinching her latest national title, a modest Wyman told Cyclingnews, "I can't say it was plain sailing for me; Gaby was pretty close for a good four laps. It was only really on the last lap that I managed to get a bigger gap between us. She also noted the blustery conditions all racers faced today, adding, "The wind here was madness, I nearly got blown off at the top - it was crazy! I was thinking 'I need to eat more!'"
