Driscoll wins the hard way

Jamey Driscoll (Cyclocrossworld/Cannondale) slipped a pedal at the start and had to work his way back through many riders before taking the lead and staying out front until the finish. Matt White (Bikereg/ Joe's Garage) and Justin Spinelli (Richard Sachs/ RGM Watches) were locked in a battle for second place until a downhill crash by Spinelli relegated him to third. Josh Dillon (Fiordifrutta) rode to a very solid fourth place while Adam Myerson (Time Pro Cycling/Cyclesmart) had one of his best races of the season to finish fifth.

Once Jamey Driscoll worked his way to the front of the race he found himself in a group of five, led by 19-year old Nick Keough (Jittery Joe's), White, Spinelli, and Myerson. It appeared that just as Driscoll assumed second wheel, Keough counter-attacked. Only Driscoll was able to follow, and eventually was able to go around Keough.

"I had to ride cross-eyed to shake him (Keough) off my wheel," said Driscoll.

Spinelli and Myerson were among the many roadies who did well on the mostly flat Sterling course. There was only one steep, muddy, run-up that in most years is rideable.

Adam Snyder (3-D Racing), an accomplished mountain biker, entertained the crowd by not only jumping the barriers, but also by repeatedly riding up a three foot horse jump. "I was a bit burned out after mountain biking season...so I am just racing cross for fun," Snyder commented.

Nick Keough appeared to fade dramatically mid-race, possibility due to illness. Will Dugan (Richard Sachs/ RGM Watches), having his best cross season ever, passed him to win the Under 23 division.

The Verge New England Championship Series wraps up next weekend in Warwick, Rhode Island. With five wins so far this season, Driscoll takes a commanding lead over Matt White into the finale.
