Frattini too fast

By Kirsten Robbins in Jamesburg, New Jersey

The scenic Thompson Park hosted the fifth round of the Verge Mid Atlantic Championship Cyclo-cross Series under sunny skies and dry terrain making the Elite men's 60 minute race unrecognizable compared to last year's unforgettably muddy slosh through the rain. Davide Frattini (Colavita/Sutter Home) took advantage of his 'cross smarts and the circuit's hills to aid in a back-to-back UCI victory and enough points to take the lead in the Verge MAC series.

Frattini out sprinted cyclo-cross strong man Jon Hamblon (Richard Sachs/RGM Watches) as Colavita/Sutter Home team-mate Matt Kraus claimed third place, securing the team's second double podium in as many days.

"To have won two races in a row means that my coach and I are working well together," said the winning Italian, who is working with Herriott Sports Performance's Todd Herriott. "It's important for me, for the team and for the sponsors who support me all season. To have a good performance is the best way to say thanks."

How it unfolded

The race started at a furious pace and before the first lap was complete a group of eight strong riders created a sizeable distance between themselves and the remaining field. The front group included Frattini, Hamblon and Kraus along Justin Spinelli (Richard Sachs/RGM Watches), Adam McGrath (Maxxis), Charles Pendry and Daniel Neyens.

Team Richard Sachs/RGM Watches used its strong numbers to drive the tempo until there were only five riders remaining at the front. Kraus, who finished third on the day, was delighted with his team-mates' successful team tactics throughout a difficult race. "We are happy with having two riders on the podium," said Kraus. "We showed great teamwork today and that was the key; that was great for us. We worked really well together and when ever one of our guys was gapped off the back, the rider driving it at the front would ease off just a bit and wait for the third rider to catch back on."

One-by-one Spinelli, Kraus and Hamblon triggered a round of attacks to try to clear Frattini before the finish, while youngster Adam McGrath used his impressive technical skills to glue himself to the front group. Frattini admitted that the course suited perfectly to his ability with the long climbs and pavement sections. "The Richard Sachs guys did a really good job but fortunately I was feeling good so I was able to cover every jump," said Frattini. "In the end there were just two Richard Sachs riders and Adam McGrath. The uphill pavement section was perfect for me because every time I hit the pavement it was like doing a good progression. It was the only section where I realized I could open a gap on the other riders."

Frattini turned up the heat with three laps to go, opening up a small margin over his rivals, but neither Hamblon nor Kraus were ready to give up a shot at victory and rejoined Frattini by the lap's end.

"I tried to be smart and follow moves for a while and then give one big attack on the last lap," explained Frattini. "I was a little bit worried about being out numbered. I wanted to make sure to be the first one onto the Richard Sachs wheel when they jumped.

"It was important not to be the second and not to be stuck behind two of those riders because that would give them the opportunity to open a gap on me," he added. "The best thing I did today was being the first rider to cover the attacks."

Hamblon's relentless attacks and giant tows on the front combined with Frattini's counter attacks on the last lap forced the two powerhouses to end the race in a two man sprint. Hamblon was hoping to set one of his team-mates up for the sprint, but when he realised he was the only rider left it was time to switch to plan B. "It was just so hard to deal with Davide because he's so fast and it was really hard to keep the race in control - we all had to burn a lot of matches just doing that," noted Hamblon.
"I wanted to be in front of him coming into the sprint," he added. "I knew I had to be in front of him over the barriers but I did everything I could and got up next to him but he went again and got ahead. It was such a short sprint that there was not way I could come back around there."
