Look Park hosted one of the fastest UCI cyclo-cross events of the season under clear skies and dry conditions. Race winner, Jesse Anthony (Jamis) predicted before the start that the race would be a group effort and he went on take his second solo victory at the finish along with enough points to regain the lead in the Verge New England Series. After a considerable amount of tactical effort during the race behind Anthony, Mark McCormack (Clif Bar) took a convincing second place in a two-up sprint against Chris Jones (Nerac).

"I wanted to make the lead group smaller because I knew that it was going to be a group style of race today because of the nature of the course," said Anthony, the Verge New England Series leader. "I tried to throw in a couple of attacks to split the field a bit and that helped bring us down to five riders."

A group of ten riders split from the front of the field that included Anthony, McCormack, Jones along with Troy Wells (Clif Bar), Adam Myerson (Nerac), Matt White (Fiordifrutta), Tristan Schouten (Planet Bike), Ryan Leach (GPOA-Cannondale), Mike Garrigan (Jet Power) and Jamey Driscoll (Fiordifrutta). Anthony and Wells were two of the most aggressive riders and their relentless attacks split the group into a more manageable wrestle between five notable riders.

McCormack, Wells, Jones, Myerson and Anthony flew around the circuit evenly matched in strength but when Anthony realized he was the only rider with out a team-mate he used that as a chance to force an opportunity for success. "I tried to ride smart and aggressive because I have a hard time racing by just sitting in the group all day," said Anthony. "I tried really hard to throw down a few times today but everyone was chasing me. At one point Mark told me to calm down and save something for the end so I chilled out a bit and waited for an opportune moment."

Team tactics played a partial role in the outcome of the race. Wells, McCormack and Anthony took turns at trying to escape from the small break, separating themselves by only small distances from one another before regrouping. Meanwhile Jones and Myerson used their complimentary riding styles to try to set Jones up in a smaller break and save Myerson, known for his fierce sprint, for the finish. Second place on the day, McCormack acknowledged his teammates efforts that aided in his podium finish and gave some good advice to aspiring cyclo-cross riders. "Troy spent a lot of time attacking today and at some points I was going out the back," said the former US national champion. "I know this course so well and I've won on it a couple of times so I know that as the guys get older and more mature they are able to race at the front and be more aggressive. All you can do out there is keep trying and eventually the pain will go away for a brief moment until the next guy decides to attack."

With two laps to go, when it looked like Myerson might have a shot at a bunch sprint, he crashed over a root littered sections of the circuit. Simultaneously, Wells attacked over the steep run up and caused mass destruction amongst his break away companions. "When I saw that Adam had made the front group I rode a little defensively so that if it came down to a sprint I would be able to help him out in the end," said Jones. "But once I lost him to a crash on the last lap I had to change my game plan. The leaders jersey is important to us and it is the goal of our team to win the series."

With all five riders spread apart by small gaps, Anthony found his winning opportunity to counterattack Wells through the sand pit. "I just put my head down and gauged my effort enough to see what kind of a gap I got," said Anthony. "There were places on the course where I felt better, like the run ups and in the technical parts but I ended up attacking out of the sand because the opportunity was right."

Anthony instantly gained a considerable lead and by the time he had climbed over the run up it was clear he had put Jones, the defending New England leader, into difficulty. "Chris is a really good racer and he deserves to be wearing this jersey too," said Anthony. "It will be a good battle from here on in because we are really close in points and I really want to win this jersey. It's very prestigious for me because there have been a lot of great racers to have worn it, so it has sentimental value."

Jones chased for two full laps with McCormack glued to his wheel but fell shy of five seconds to fully make contact before the line. McCormack commended Jones on the immense effort he put forward. "I think it was inevitable that the race would have blown apart at the end," said McCormack. "The hardest part of the race, for me, was following Chris around on the last lap. He was absolutely flying and if he had another half a lap he would have caught Jesse."

"I don't think I would have help out in the chase even if I had been able to get around Chris," added McCormack. "I couldn't have closed the gap to Jesse. I was giving everything I had just stay on Chris' wheel and I lost his wheel a couple of times going down the hill. I caught him on the last rise and I knew that if I could do that, than I could hold his wheel through all the corners to the finish - where my savvy ness came out of me and I had just enough energy in me to come around him. We both dug really deep but when your following you have that little bit of reserved energy left because of being able to relax a little through the corners."

Bessette back on form

Lyne Bessette (Cyclocrossworld.com) proved to be back on form after winning her second UCI race in two days. The podium was identical to the previous days race with Rebecca Wellons (Ridley Factory Team) powering her way to the finish line for second place ahead of Maureen Bruno-Roy (Independent Fabrications).

The women's race started in a sprint for the first gravel corner. The four usual suspects included Bessette, Wellons, Bruno-Roy and Natasha Elliot (Stevens). They exited the woods onto the flat valley in a tight knit lead group but Bessette gained a significant lead over her three competitors on the steep run up and continued to increase her gap over the forty-minute race.

Bessette has battled a cold that has taken two weeks to fully recover from but admitted she was happy to be feeling better after her solo victory. "I'm still not feeling one hundred percent but I think I'm getting much better," said Bessette. "When I was sick and tired I was racing and I just felt like I had no control over my bike and I couldn't push on my pedals but I was feeling much better today."

The race for second place was an exciting battle between Bruno-Roy and Wellons as each rider tried to open a gap on the other through the challenging sections of the course.

"We were constantly attacking each other so it might have looked like we were working together, but my take on it is that we were trying to see where the other would falter," said Wellons. "Maureen was really good up through the turns. I'd try attacking her up the run up and on the and on the road because I feel like that is where my strengths are, is the road power. She road really well today and it was a lot of fun. But in the end we were together and it came down to the road section."

Bruno-Roy acknowledged that she has just found her fitness after being sick for the start of the cyclo-cross season but is hoping to continue to improve before the US national championships next month. "I was feeling a little tired today after yesterday's race," said Bruno-Roy. "But ninety percent of today's course was flat and fast and not really an advantage to a rider like me - more suited to a powerful rider. I had to find little places where I could get a gap or use some momentum plus I had to give it everything I had on the flat stuff."

"It is this time of year where I feel like I get fitter and then I get nervous because I realize that there are just five more races until nationals," added Bruno-Roy. "It feels like it's going to end before it gets started. But I'd like to continue to improve and get stronger for nationals."

Lyne orbited around the technical circuit with ease that her gap would be large enough to claim another win. "I went pretty steady and a little faster through the corners today," said Bessette. "On the last lap I tried to push it even more but I still feel a little sluggish. I'm happy with this weekend. It is a really fun course and a lot of little things that are different. Unfortunately I wish we could have ridden the sand. We don't get too many chances to ride in the sand and it would have been good practice."

Coming to the finishing pavement, Wellons used her criterium smarts to land a second place. "I wanted a little bit more of a gap coming onto the pavement but she was right on my wheel," said Wellons. "I felt confident that I could stay in front of her in a sprint but we started side by side and I was able to power way from her on the road."
