Wicks wreaks havoc at Coyote Point

With a very heavy National race schedule Santa Cruz resident Barry Wicks has only an occasional chance to race in Northern California, and with this last weekend before the frozen US Championships in Kansas City, Wicks took advantage of sparkling winter weather in the race-by-the-bay, the final round of the Bay Area Super Prestige Series.
Faced with not only the Giant Berry squad headed by Andy Jacques-Maynes and series leader Justin Robinson but also the usual hefty swarm of HRS-Rock Lobsters, Wicks had company for just a couple of laps before dropping AJ and riding through many of the 40 man field to take a very decisive victory.
The 1.9 mile circuit in the county park just minutes from the San Francisco airport is a two-part beast, the hilly eucalyptus forest section contains a single barricade and exits onto the gravel shoreline. Due to adverse tidal actions in the past six years, the sandy beach has disappeared, leaving riders to plow their way through more tiny gravel fields than sand remnants. The 50-yard stretch is ride able if competitors have a clear shot at the entrance but the slightest bit of traffic forces a dismount. The balance of the course is pancake flat with two additional sets of barricades and an infamous little off-camber berm that circles around a pine tree.
Barbara Howe held off Josie Jacques-Maynes and Sarah Kerlin as the top three women finished in a short 70 yard sprint from the final corner to the finish arch in the Elite Women's contest. Third place Kerlin still had a comfortable margin in the overall points standings to take the '07 title but this was just the second NorCal race of the '07 season for former Worlds Team member Howe as the National circuit claimed the attention of another NorCal rider for most of her 2007 season.

The KC Nationals for 40+ is going to be a significant test for NorCal Masters. Gannon Myall has been just behind the leader at all six US GP races this season and with former National Champ Todd Hoefer on Myall's Giant Berry team, with title aspirations of his own – and former National Champ James Coats also on the start line Coyote Point was their last tune-up before packing the anti-freeze for the chilly mid-west.
Throughout the forest, the beach, and the final flat stretches the trio remained in close contact with Myall opening a final three second gap over Coats at the finish. On to Kansas City where Myall gets a front row call-up this year instead of Providence in '06 where he was buried in the back half of the starting field.
