Jacques-Maynes (but which one?) and Lloyd take wins in Surf City #2

This year's Spirit of Surf City race might well have marked the change of seasons here in the land of microbrews and costumed NorCross. A signaling sea breeze brought the scent of California winter rains to come, giving hope to the afficianados that we'll see a few mud-filled races later this season. But, for this second race of the Velo Bella promoted series, riders were given one last sun-filled day of Halloween madness and elite bike racing at the fairgrounds in Watsonville, CA.

In the men's event, Barry Wicks took the start at the Watsonville Fairgrounds as series leader and man-to-beat. But on a course that favored long draws on the power meter, with a section aptly named 'Purgatory', it would be a difficult chore for the lanky Kona rider to drop the likes of Tour of California contender Ben Jacques-Maynes (CyclocrossWorld.com). But the crowds were never quite sure which Jacques-Maynes was actually at the front of the race, Ben or Andy? In a show of true Surf City spirit, the crowd favorite twins had switched both kits AND bikes - dressing themselves as the brother's sponsored team. Undoubtedly, Wick's decision not to costume-up would come back to haunt him.

California Giant Strawberries rider Justin Robinson stormed through the Blair Witch Swirly first (a crowd pleasing spiral through a grassy field), creating a selection of the strongmen of the race. After one lap of racing, the field was thinned to an easy-gliding Wicks, the Jacques-Maynes brothers, Robinson, and Simon Vickers of HRS/Rocklobster.

By lap two, the crowds saw Wicks and the Jacques-Maynes brothers climb out of the dark and dusty Hopeless Hill with a strong lead over Robinson and Vickers. Ben Jacques-Maynes rode with Wicks for the rest of the race, each doing their best to find a weakness in the other. Unfortunately, Wicks' weakness ended up being in his seatpost, as a last lap snap forced him to ride out of the saddle to the finish, giving free ride to the Jacques-Maynes brothers to pass him.

The women's event similarly saw a breaking piece of equipment help decide the results. The Vanderkitten "So Hot it's Naughty" $100 opening lap was taken by Rachel Lloyd (ProMan). She and Velo Bella rider Sarah Kerlin established a 30 second gap on the chasing HRS/RockLobster riders, Shelley Olds and Stella Carey. Soon after though, Kerlin snapped a chain, and was forced to run from the far section of the course to get a spare bike. The opening was all Lloyd needed, as she soloed away from the field to take yet another NorCross victory. Shelley Olds chased long and hard throughout the race, but never quite made the juncture to Lloyd. Kerlin recovered from back in the field and rode herself back within a minute of Lloyd - showing excellent determination and resolve.

The ever infamous and always outrageous costume cross race saw a record 53 racers vying for Gizdich Ranch pie and New Belgium Brewing beer. Winners included a cow girl and cow tandem, a horse tandem, and far too many men in nymph costumes. One rider, however, was disqualified, for attempting to compete in the same costume as he wore the year before. A flagrant violation of Costume Cross rules.

The Surf City series concludes on November 12th when all series winners will be celebrated. In addition, Velo Bella will be hosting a Cat C Women only race, to allow newcomers to the sport an opportunity to race with no other groups out on the course. Surf City Cyclocross is part of the heritage of cyclo-cross racing in Northern California. Running since 1975, the series has attracted world class racers, and has established Northern California as a hotbed of cyclo-cross racing. Surf City is currently promoted by the Velo Bella-Kona cycling team, which has added kiddie kross, clinics, and other beginner incentives to the fabled racing series.
